Just got back from Orlando so waited to review until trip was complete. This book was a great resource in planning our trip to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. The information was accurate and helpful, especially in deciding what to see first in each day.

I bought this book a few months ago and have been going through it very well to find out all the info I can. I've never been to Universal Studios before and really want to go for my son's 10th birthday and my birthday in December. Our main goal is to see all of the Harry Potter stuff. Everything else would be an added bonus. One of the things that I had been looking at are the hotels on the Universal property. This book gives you a pretty good outline of the pros and cons of each hotel. I did figure out from this book that you can't use the express pass on the harry potter attractions which was the thing that would've been worth it to stay at one of their hotels. The book also goes into detail about all of the rides, how much the food at the various places in the park costs and it even gives you a good day planner. The day planner even has a different agenda for the Harry Potter fans, which is great for us!. Overall the book is very helpful and helping to plan our trip and gives me a pretty good idea on how much money I'll need. Great book! Definitely get it if you've never been to Universal Studios and want something to help give you a good idea of things.

I used this and the Unofficial Disneyworld book on a recent business trip where I took advantage of tickets to USF and Disney at every available opportunity. It was a great read before getting to the park and I found the suggestions helpful. I actually don't agree on which ride is the best but that is subjective anyway and nothing I'd mark down for. I found this super helpful to get me through Universal Orlando in the time I had with the best happiness. I didn't take my own advice and did a one day two park hopper - but if you have to do that this book is a MUST!

Like others who have reviewed this, I am a Disney person and had no idea of what to expect at Universal. Just vague ideas of Harry Potter. This book answered all my questions and then some.
It is very comprehensive and I like the way it is divided into chapters and sections.Very easy to find specific information as well as presenting everything you need to know about the park sections, resorts and basic how to get there information.
I think anyone interested in going to Universal whether for the first time or as a repeat visitor will find this book is excellent

We just got back from a trip to Orlando to visity Disney World and Universal. I have been to Disney before but never Universal. This book was perfect to utilize in order to prepare for my days at Universal. Universal is different froim Disney with different things to offer. It is also more of an adult experience. There are two separate parks to Universal and this book fully describes in great detail what to expect with each. Each ride/event is described fully which is a great help to prepare before going. The ISLANDS OF ADVENTURE park is filled with themed rides that are amazing, fast and not for those who tend to get motion sickness. Awesome roller coasters and fast rides. I knew from this book to take my motion sickness med and I was able to enjoy all of it. My favorite ride was the adventure of JAWS.

But back to the book. All you need to know about the parks - rides, food, parking, when to go and what to expect is all here. Nothing is left out. If going to Universal you will have a blast and this book is the only one you need in order to prepare.

Enjoy.

Being a very compulsive vacation planner, I have read, or at least skimmed just about every Universal and Disney/Universal guide book out there. This one is the best, especially if you are planning a true Universal Orlando vacation, rather than just a Universal day or two during a Disney vacation.
The planning section covers everything you need to know about visiting at different times of the year, the advantages of staying on-site, ticket options, transportation information, and so forth.
Mr. Monaghan does a great job covering all the attractions, including comparisons to similar Disney attractions, best seats, and descriptions of how scared or wet you might get. There are also touring plans for those who don't have the on-site hotel express privileges. The only addition that would make these summaries even more useful would be survey results showing what ratings people of different age groups give each attraction (as provided in Bob Sehlinger's unofficial guides).
This book gives the best restaurant descriptions of any guide I've looked at. Mr. Monaghan describes the atmosphere, noise level, and of course food quality of each full service and counter service restaurant (and even the little food carts) in the parks, hotels, and Citywalk. These reviews could only be improved by adding information on whether vegetarian options are available and some more detail on available kid's meals (since kids are usually the pickiest eaters!)
The descriptions of each of the three resort hotels really made me want to try staying at all of them! The amenities of each hotel (including the all-important hotel pool) are given plenty of detail, as well as a feel for the overall atmosphere of each hotel. The different rooms are described well, but I would love to have floor plans and square footage given for at least the more common room types.
The information on Citywalk is great and gives enough detail even for me!
The chapter on off-site hotels is very bare-bones (just a brief sentence or less and list of amenities for each property), so those planning to stay off-site would probably want to find another hotel information source. Or better yet, change your plans and stay on-site!
Overall this guide is probably more than enough for a "normal" vacation planner. Pictures would be a great addition, but I suppose there might be some legal or expense related reason that there are no pictures. For people like myself who enjoy information overload (as in the Unofficial Disney guides), this book could add in a lot more information. I would love to know more about the history of the Universal theme parks and maybe some humorous or interesting anecdotes about the parks, hotels, various attractions, etc.
Last of all, you may want to check the other orlando dotcom (trying not to get this information deleted!) first for more information.
Happy vacationing!
