Harry's Bar, which claims to be the birthplace of the Bloody Mary, is a small corner of Manhattan in the heart of Paris. Originally called the New York Bar, it opened on Thanksgiving Day 1911, soon attracting American expatriates and celebrities. Harry's is like a club without an official membership. Mr Da Silva says that since 1924 Harry's Bar has held straw polls of Americans living in Paris which have correctly predicted the winners of all but two US presidential elections.

I have recently returned from Barbados (the visit took place before receiving the Harry S. Pariser version of "Explore Barbados"), and can attest that the information contained therein is the most accurate currently available in Barbados guide-books of similar scope. This is a "must have" copy for first-time visitors to Barbados to see all of the most familiar and most of the least familiar sights and activities available on the small island. While the book cannot improve the rather poor surface condition of Barbados roads, it certainly shows maps of which roads should be taken to access the unforgettable beautiful sights and locations of activities.

If you are planning to visit the exotic, mysterious land of British-ruled Barbados, you will be met by a blend of English and African cultures, temperatures that can only be experienced near the equator and waters so blue you may wonder if you're seeing a mirage. This Explore Barbados guide provides everything you need to know whether you're an armchair traveler, a first time visitor or a returning guest. Learn about island history (Columbus didn't discover or name this island), people, flora and fauna, politics, climate, lodging, food, music, festivals and sight seeing opportunities you won't want to miss. The pages contain a diverse wealth of information that readers will not find in traditional travel guides. For instance, Pariser warns visitors about the poisonous "machineel" that grows along the beaches, the "poison tree" and the "cow itch vine." Descriptive accounts of animals will make it easy for travelers to recognize Barbados Green Monkeys, Blackbelly Sheep and a variety of tropical birds and reptiles. I do quite a bit of traveling and often buy a Lonely Planet guide as a basic reference. Lately, however, I've become somewhat jaded by its formulaic coverage and superficial approach. I'm also skeptical about how they go about choosing which accomodations and restaurants to include in their books.

Pariser's book at first glance looks remarkably like a Lonely Planet guide--the same format and much the same information. However, Pariser puts more of himself into it and the book clearly is a labor of love. Pariser's guide compares to Lonely Planet like a family restaurant to McDonalds.

Harry Pariser's Explore Barbados is the best coverage of the island that I've seen. Besides hotels and inns, restaurants and activities, it details all sorts of fun stuff--like highways are just country roads, notes about the Bajans quirks and Creole rites, sidenotes on Vanilla orchids, odd uses of Aloe, like mothers using it to stop thumbsucking and a wonderful glossary of local lingo. Tidbits are scattered throughout -- i.e. The walking stick around a house may forecast a death in the family. The overall layout and design is nice with easy to read maps, beautiful photos and nice legible type. It's a joy to read and use.

I did not find this book to be helpful in providing information specific to Barbados that I could not find in any free tourist booklet on the island. There is a whole page on "Beach Boys"... there are local men anywhere you may go on vacation that will try to pick up vacationing women. This is not information specific to Barbados. There is a whole page on "What to take": Shoes and socks, underwear,swimsuit,soap,sunscreen,comb,shaving kit,etc,etc. Please!!! I stayed at the Coconut Court Beach Resort which is one of the oldest and most respected family run hotels on the island and it is not even listed in the accomodation sections. I would save your money and pick up the multitude of free guides available on the island.
Funny duck
This guidebook is excellent! We finally got away from the all inclusives and went to the East Coast of the island. We stayed at a fabulous B&B in Bathsheba that was mentioned in this book. The sound of the ocean lulled us to sleep at the Sea-U guest house. We went over to the Andromeda Gardens which were close and saw beautiful tropical flora. This book had great hiking information in it as well. I am going to remember this trip for a long time and want to thank the author for sending us to such wonderful, not to miss places!

My wife and I were very disapointed with the guide book. It was great for history and culture, but not very helpful on what to do. Very dry and lots of lists, but very few recomendations. Don't waste your money. We found broshures we got from Barbados Tourist Agency and those we picked up on island more helpful.
