This little book has photos of all the basics you need for travel in a country where you have no idea how to read directions, signs, menus, etc. Just open the book and point. You can probably find something like this in an app - but I don't like to carry my phone while traveling, so this pocket-sized book is great.

My Mandarin is conversational, at best. So when I stumble on details (such as which vegetables to order), I pull this out and point to it. My version has English and Chinese characters, which helps communicate my point across even better. The only thing I wish it had was pinyin. The pinyin would have helped jogged my memory of some of the words and phrases and at least give me an attempt on my own! This was definitely came in handy when I went to rural areas where the local dialect was completely incomprehensible to me.
But for those who are attempting independent travel in China, especially the more rural areas, and do not know Mandarin (or even the local dialect), this book is highly recommended.
X-MEN
Travelling in China relying solely on English will greatly limit the experiences you can have there.

In this regard, the book is very functional and is a good investment for any trip longer than a week:
small size means you'll take the book with you and the content covers many common tourist situations, letting you explore where you otherwise couldn't.

That said, smartphones offer similar functionality when coupled with internet access on-the-go (image search or dictionary apps).
Also, I only recommend this for people staying in China for a short time, as the book has no PinYin to assist Mandarin learners in their pronunciation.
Lastly, "Me No Speak" is a somewhat demeaning title and not the greatest foreign policy for Americans going abroad.

Could not have gotten along in China without it! My husband and I don't speak a word of Chinese - we didn't take a tour - we did it on our own and remember....Google doesn't work in most of China. No google translate! We did use some Pleco (the app) but that doesn't always do it either. Buy this if you plan a trip to china.

Yes as It said, You don't need to lear or speak chinese with this book. Just show to the person what you want and he only need to readed and do/show/ etc... what you show to him/her.
The only problem will be if the person don't read, jajaja.
Good book, great for me.

Took our first trip to China and this book was very helpful in many instances. It came in very handy when a taxi driver took us to the airport instead of the train station,I carried with me all the time and used it at stores, restaurants

Very helpful!
We just spent two weeks in China and were able to buy bandaids, ask for drinking glasses, and most importantly, a fork. Not everything we needed was included, but the book was quite helpful.
