The Water’s Edge has a lot to offer crime fans: a richly cinematic portratit of a posh resort in late winter, lashed by rains and socked in by fog; complicated protagonists; really evil mobsters; possibly corrupt cops; and a labyrinthine plot that unwinds in just 24 hours. The book’s weakness lies in the author’s overwriting. Too often, after showing the reader Bechet’s courage or Miller’s pain, Judson then tells us about it. Sometimes twice, in italics After reading this one, I gave up on Judson altogether.

Daniel Judson’s three novels, including The Darkest Place, have all garnered Shamus Award nominations, and one Shamus prize. He attended Southampton College, and his time in the Hamptons (particularly the parts you don’t find in the society pages) was the inspiration for the setting and characters in The Water’s Edge. He now lives in Connecticut.

Shamus-winner Judson (The Water's Edge) once again successfully mines Long Island's south fork for glittering noir nuggets. Auto mechanic Caleb Rakowski, the lone survivor of a criminal family, lives on the fringes of respectability in a two-room apartment above the garage owned by his wealthy boss, Eric Carver. Daniel Judson is so much more than a crime-fiction novelist. He’s a tattooed poet, a mad philosopher of the Apocalypse fascinated with exploring the darkest places in people’s souls. -Chicago Tribune on The Water’s Edge.

When Jake "Payday" Bechet hears that two men have been murdered a few miles from where he lives in the Hamptons---hanged fromthe Shinnecock Bridge, their hands severed---he knows that trouble is coming. Trouble for him, for everyone, because it means that someone has betrayed the Castello crime family. Whether it’s someone trying to move in on their drug operation or the cops making their own statement, he doesn’t know, but he wants to stay far away from it all. After all, years ago Bechet himself walked away from the Castellos with enough inside information to hold over their heads and to keep himself safe, then went underground. He doesn’t want to get anywhere near them now butsoon discovers that he can’t remain indifferent---first it seems one of his friends has gotten involved in the fringes of this battle, and then the larger picture becomes clear: Jorge Castello himself wants Bechet to find out who’s behind the killings, claiming there’s a traitor in the family. The last thing Bechet wants to do is work for the Castellos again, but he knows he has to find a way to finish it somehow.Between Bechet and Tommy Miller, a retired P.I. whose ex-girlfriend has also gotten too close to the Castellos and whose father was one of their casualties a few years back, all the loose ends will be tied up---one way or another---before the end of twenty-four hours.Once again Daniel Judson shines an unforgiving light on the darkest parts of the Hamptons and delivers a powerful, unforgettable read paced at breakneck speed.

How do so many lives go wrong? How do people figure out how to cheat each other so much? Unbelievable!

For those who are not familiar with Daniel Judson, he is a writer in league with Crais, Baldacci, Sandford, Chandler, Brad Thor and Vince Flynn. His stories are well-told with rich character development and plenty of plot twists. There is a noir quality to his books that adds to the flavor. The Water's Edge is one of his best!

Lost direction characters change without reason no plot a storyline that gets worse with each sequel
