The book also continues the Petrunin/Hyde subplot from Sea Leopard, which will conclude in The Bear's Tears. Also notable for the debut of Tony Godwin, who Craig will use in his books to follow.

After completing his MA on Thomas Hardy, he went into teaching. Throughout his eleven years teaching English, Thomas longed to go into writing. At first he began to write only occasionally, producing a number of scripts for radio and TV, all of which were rejected. David Craig Owen Thomas (24 November 1942 – 4 April 2011) was a Welsh author of thrillers, most notably the Mitchell Gant and Kenneth Aubrey series of novels. The son of the Western Mail rugby union writer JBG Thomas, he was educated at Cardiff High School.
