This book sucked me in from the first chapter. I have long been a fan of the Commissario Brunetti books, but this one was a particularly well plotted mystery. It begins with a visit to the Brunetti home by an architect who works at the Ufficio Catasta, the government office that oversees construction and housing renovation. It seems to be an almost comical vignette demonstrating one of the multiple ways in which Venetians constantly cheat government regulations. Then things take a turn when the architect learns that Brunetti is a cop with a good reputation, and reaches out to report something illegal going on in his office. Before he can share the details, he is found dead near a construction site, and certain details lead Brunetti to believe it is not the "accident" the local police believe it to be. Unauthorized, and of his own volition, Brunetti begins an Investigation of the architect's death. The motives are clear, the suspects not, and there are two more deaths before Brunetti finds the murderer. The ending is satisfying in a justice denied, yet justice served fashion that makes completely fits in with the theme of the book. There's less of the family and more of Brunetti's internal struggle with his fight for justice vs. his growing cynicism about the ills of the society he lives in, but I thoroughly enjoyed that aspect. If you are a fan of Leon's books, or looking for a solid police procedural with a bit of social commentary, this is a good book to pick up.

Friends in High Places, published in 2000, reliably delivers Leon's trademark serving of deep skepticism about social and political justice in Italy, especially in Venice. It seems that but one honest man stands against the tsunami of corruption and incompetence that is rolling over Venice, Commissario Guido Brunetti, Leon's hyper-vigelant Venetian police detective. Friends in High Places, winner of the CMA Golden Dagger Award in 2000, finds Brunetti probing the circumstances surrounding three brutal murders and finding that they lead him into the well-protected arena of what we know in the good old USA as loan-sharking. Leon, a long-time resident of Venice, graces her books with vivid local color, delivered in turn by turn accounts of Brunetti's movements about the city. These, and his vivid engagements with the rapier-like intelligence of his wife, a university professor, are what keep me coming back to Leon's books, some of them more than once.

Friends in High Places is the 9th novel in the Commissario Guido Brunetti series and it did not disappoint. As in the other books in the series, Brunetti ponders one or more categories of social injustice; this time he is preoccupied by corruption of public officials and troubled also by usurious money-lenders, a husband & wife who have become wealthy as lenders of last resort charging 50% interest per month. Against Brunetti's consideration of these ills, of course there are several crimes to solve, which he does with his usual deliberate methods and the assistance of Signorina Elettra's computer skills. Woven in and out, as always, we see the tableaux of Brunetti's interactions with his wife and children and also with his fellow officers; we watch his university professor wife, Paola, prepare the most delicious lunches and dinners; and we make our way around Venice with Brunetti as he goes about his life. I absolutely love this series of novels and recommend them to anyone who enjoys reading about a philosophical man who studies ancient history in his free time and is a committed public servant living his daily life in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Always love the Donna Leon books. She brings Venice alive and her characters are complex and interesting. This novel has once again combined a mystery with the ongoing frustrations of dealing with "uncivil" servants and a system that defies comprehension. Guido's ability to navigate both the police force he works for and the government agencies he is forced to deal with is nothing short of brilliant. Results are not always fully achieved, but then that is so much more true to life than most novels which wrap everything up in a tidy bundle at the end. Leon always leaves some questions unanswered which adds to the realism of her stories. The relationship between Guido and his wife and children, brings to life the day by day struggle to understand one another that we all face. This family has become a part of my family and I look forward to every one of her books with the same joy and anticipation that Guido articulates when he reads one of his ancient Greek war anthologies. Another winner for Leon.

This was another fine visit to Venice care of Ms. Leon. Guido Brunetti's struggle with what's right and what's the norm in corruption continues.... It all begins with Guido and Paola's apartment being questioned by the agency assigned to finding illegal building in the city. Once again, corruption abounds and Guido's allegiances become a moral dilemma. I loved the vivid descriptions of the city, of the aura of it, and the dichotomies that evolve. I'm so glad that this series is a long one, one I plan to complete.
