The Ipcress File was my first attempt to write a book. I was a commercial artist, or ‘illustrator’ as we are now called. Perhaps this spy fellow is not me after all. Len Deighton, 2009. Secret File No. 1. Prologue

The Ipcress File was my first attempt to write a book. I had never been a journalist or reporter of any kind so I was unaware of how long writing a book was likely to take. Prologue. Copy to: no. no. Copies 2.

Len Deighton was born in 1929. Deciding it was time to settle down, Deighton moved to the Dordogne where he started work on his first book, The Ipcress File. He worked as a railway clerk before doing his National Service in the RAF as a photographer attached to the Special Investigation Branch. After his discharge in 1949, he went to art school-first to the St Martin’s School of Art, and then to the Royal College of Art on a scholarship. Published in 1962, the book was an immediate success. Since then his work has gone from strength to strength, varying from espionage novels to war, general fiction and non-fiction.

The IPCRESS File is Len Deighton's first spy novel, published in 1962. It was made into a film in 1965 produced by Harry Saltzman, directed by Sidney J. Furie and starring Michael Caine. The novel involves Cold War brainwashing, includes scenes in Lebanon and on an atoll for a United States atomic weapon test, as well as information about Joe One, the Soviet Union's first atomic bomb, although these elements did not appear in the film version.

I just finished The IPCRESS File yesterday. I was glad that I had the luxury of not going to work today because it let me stay up until I finished the book at 3 . Yes, I really did like it that much.

The Ipcress File book. The Ipcress File was not only Len Deighton’s first novel, it was his first bestseller and the book that broke the mould of thriller writing. For the working class narrator, an apparently Len Deighton’s classic first novel, whose protagonist is a nameless spy – later christened Harry Palmer and made famous worldwide in the iconic 1960s film starring Michael Caine.

An army major with an amazing memory for facts and figures went around with us. The bomb to be exploded was a ‘fractional crit bomb’, the major explained to us. ‘Uranium, when enough (that is a critical mass) of it comes together, explodes. But if the density is squeezed, the same explosion can come from a smaller quantity.

Author: Len Deighton. Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers In. New York, 1995. For the working class narrator, an apparently straightforward mission to find a missing biochemist becomes a journey to the heart of a dark and deadly conspiracy. The film of The Ipcress File gave Michael Caine one of his first and still most celebrated starring roles, while the novel itself has become a classic.

What I recalled from my original read of this novel many years ago bears little resemblance to the re-reading I've just completed. Either my synapses are failing or I skipped over the detailed anecdotes that led nowhere and the fantastical suppositions. Added to the fact that one should read the last chapter first, just to get the lay of the land and who did what to whom, and you have a very problematic story at hand, I would love to know if others in my situation felt the same. Deighton's other stuff is generally superb, but I missed something in re.reading this.,

This is the official alternative to the Ian Flemming James Bond bools. While it does not meet the Ian Fleming standards, it is an entirely satisfying alternative. Don't expect historical accuracy or to become enlightened about how the spy industry works. Just expect to be entertained and you will not be disappointed.

One of the touch stones of espionage fiction, although the book does not match up that closely with the film. That only matters in that most people who come to this will have seen Michael Caine in the movie version first. Well, at least it is not like Deighton's Funeral In Berlin where they made a completely different film from the book!

I just finished The IPCRESS File yesterday. I was glad that I had the luxury of not going to work today because it let me stay up until I finished the book at 3 A.M. Yes, I really did like it that much.

The movie of the same name simplifies the complexities out of the book- of course that was necessary but unfortunate. But as you read, keep your own list of characters, or you will get lost. Deighton is a master writer, so prepare for a narrative feast.

Len's first book and it has some continuity problems, otherwise excellent

I watched the movie first. This is how I learned about the author. The book was better than the movie.
Excellent book. Very well written with an intellectual plot. Excellent insights into the world of espionage.
