The law firm of Turner & Waters has a new associate. Jodie Waters has finally worked her way up from Stan's secretary to become a full fledged attorney. Having great confidence in her abilities, Stan asks her to help him in the investigation of a wrongful death case. A worker in a local sweatshop has died and his family wants the owner, Icaro Melendez to pay for the crime. The problem is the Dallas Police and the FBI have closed out the case for lack of evidence. It seems like a hopeless case, but Stan reluctantly agrees to have Jodie look into it. Jodie, excited to have her first case, boldly launches into an investigation and soon finds herself working undercover as the girlfriend of one of Icaro Melendez' sons. While Jodie and Stan are busy with the Melendez case Paula Waters takes on the defense of a young mother accused of stabbing her husband to death with an ice pick. Paula is ecstactic to get such a high profile case until she finds out her client is broke and this isn't the first time one of Maureen Thompson's husband has been bludgeoned to death with an ice pick. She learns that her client dubbed "the Ice Pick Widow" by the media survived her first murder trial due to a hung jury but wonders if she'll be so lucky this time around.

I received a free copy of this book through Goodreads First Reads in exchange for a fair review.

If you are a fan of legal thrillers by John Grisham, Tony Dunbar, and Teresa Burrell, you will like this book. (Actually, one could easily mistake it for a book by John Grisham) The book is so enjoyable to read because the characters’ inner worlds and the environment are described in detail, and the story has so many twists and turns. It is also edited carefully and is written by someone articulate with excellent language skills. The story telling flows well and is fast-paced with breathtaking suspense. Almost four-hundred page book has three legal thrillers and so many characters with side stories going at the same time, making the story lines so complex that it gets confusing getting back and forth sometimes. It doesn’t hurt the fact the main character is a decent, loving, and kind person and a husband, and the book doesn’t have graphic violence, sex, or explicit language. I personally think a three hundred page book has the ideal length and this book has enough material for two books. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this book a lot, it was hard for me to put it down after starting, and I will add the books by this author to my reading list. Five stars.

Here, readers will find that two women are being accused of their husbands' murders. So, there are two women sleuths each working a separate murder case that involves a woman being charged for the crime of murdering their husbands. What's really interesting is that one of these accused women has been labeled as a wife killer because each of her husbands has been killed "by her". Then, there's the fact that this same woman killer who was talking to Stan about how her husband left her poor and that she wished he was dead...and then ends up in jail charged, of her husband's death. She definitely had the motive but did she do it? Next, a Hispanic woman is wanting another trial. She also has been charged, for killing, her husband. Except she blames the boss who is tangled up in the drug cartel...

Deadly Defiance is exactly that. Stan and his new partner Jodie get mixed up in a deadly situation that has them defying the cartel who wants revenge on them...and then there's Paula taking on the other murder case. Danger, excitement, and intrigue will follow readers on every page. The suspense of this new thriller will have readers on the edge of their seats waiting to see what happens next...Will the team of three survive their toughest cases yet or will they be taken out by their enemies? Deadly Defiance: A Stan Turner Mystery (vol. 10) is definitely a must read for all. William Manchee is a very talented writer whose juicy thick plots will have readers immediately hooked from the beginning. The first novel, I have read in this series and now look forward to reading more. Overall, I highly recommend this thriller mystery to readers worldwide.

Stan Turner and his best friend Paula Waters are partners in the law firm Turner and Waters Law offices,
Jodie Marshall was hired originally as a secretary, but it did not take long for Stan and Paula to see Jodie's great potential to be an attorney and agreed to put her through law school giving the law office 3 attorneys.

Paula is handling the case for Maureen Thompson accused of murdering her husband who left her penniless and she has been nick-named the "Ice Pick Widower". Paula is wondering if the firm will be paid at all for representing Ms. Thompson.

Stan's case is Herbert Wolfe who died after a plane crash and on his death bed said he had a son who he never met. He has millions and his wife and two brothers who are heirs do not want this new family member found. Plus with Jodie just passing the bar she needs all the assistance she can get with her case. And if that was not enough Stan's wife is ill and the doctors have been unable to find the cause of her illness.

Jodie has the case involving the death of an illegal alien Romildo Alvarez who was found dead of a drug overdose who's wife Pandora wants to pursue a wrongful death and wants the man who did this (his boss, Icaro Melendez) found guilty. Icaro Melendez is connected with the Mexican Drug cartel and his business is just a front.

I really like the balance of this book, it's a book that you will not only enjoy but one you will share.

In Deadly Defiance, there are 3 cases Turner & Waters investigates. The wrongful death/murder case, the bankruptcy/murder case, and the missing heir case.

Stan Turner, Paula Waters and Jodie Marshall work on all of the cases, however, each attorney is primary on only one case. This allows the author to switch viewpoints between characters which, aside from once or twice, he does seamlessly.

There was also one instance where the names of the female attorneys where switched accidentally for two lines which caused me confusion for a moment.

Those issues aside, the plot moves quickly with action and in depth investigation into each case. The courtroom proceedings are not left out either. Everything is properly described but not too verbose.

Overall, a thrilling read!
