Another one of David Baldacci’s veterans comes to the scene in this first book of John Puller series. We see several skills between him and Will Robie common and it’s like Robie given a decent personality this time. John Puller is not an assassin rather he is a military officer and an investigator with a firm will. The extremity of the missions of this soldier also reminds us about books like The Guilty and The Hit by the same author. The family was not just killed it was brutally slaughtered and it is clear from the scene that the motive behind all this was personal.

From David Baldacci--the modern master of the thriller and #1 worldwide bestselling novelist-comes a new hero: a lone Army Special Agent taking on the toughest crimes facing the nation. And Zero Day is where it all begins....John Puller is a combat veteran and the best military investigator in the U.S. Army's Criminal Investigation Division. His father was an Army fighting legend, and his brother is serving a life sentence for treason in a federal military prison. Puller has an indomitable spirit and an unstoppable drive to find the truth. Now, Puller is called out on a case in a remote, rural area in West Virginia coal country far from any military outpost. Someone has stumbled onto a brutal crime scene, a family slaughtered. The local homicide detective, a headstrong woman with personal demons of her own, joins forces with Puller in the investigation. As Puller digs through deception after deception, he realizes that absolutely nothing he's seen in this small town, and no one in it, are what they seem. Facing a potential conspiracy that reaches far beyond the hills of West Virginia, he is one man on the hunt for justice against an overwhelming force. Reviews about Zero Day (John Puller Series) (7):

I came late to this book, so obviously, with over 1,000 reviews already written, I'm hardly going to discuss the plot or the fact that no matter how much I think I can project the ending, Baldacci ALWAYS surprises me. No. What I am going to discuss in this review is John Puller, the "new" hero (I know he's in another book now, which I have just ordered!) from this author.

What I love most about Baldacci is that his heroes/heroines are honorable, good people. They are flawed, sometimes heavily flawed. They make mistakes. They second-guess themselves. They aren't always right, which makes them so believable. I fell in love with John Puller almost immediately. He has a strong set of morals, he has integrity, he has skills that make one's heart stop--but above all, he is still human. He can hurt. He can love fiercely and loyally. He has nightmares. He has doubts. And yet through it all, he is the kind of superhero that we all wish we knew.

I wasn't sure until the last page that Puller would survive this adventure, and I certainly did not expect the emotional twists and turns that came my way. Baldacci is so subtly skilled at weaving a plot that even people like me, who do not usually gravitate to "army superhero" types, become riveted.

I LOVED this book, and hope that Puller remains in Baldacci's lexicon.

John Puller is a modern day action hero with a keen sense of observation born of a life in the military. The story places him in a coal mining town where nothing much happens except poverty and desperation. He is sent there to investigate the murders of a family headed up by another military intelligence officer. He finds himself paired with a local law enforcement officer who happens to be a woman with close personal connections in the community. The team is presented with a puzzling crime scene and even more murders. The story progresses at a steady rate, presenting a few surprises and allowing the hero to show off his intelligence and physical prowess. It is a pretty good page turner for a summer read. It is strangely timely in subject matter, speaking to the economic gap and the rape of the environment. It is not a fine piece of literature, but a passable who done it.

My first novel that I read from this author was a story in another series with the main character being a man named Amos Decker. After I read those, I decided to try another series by the author and I am glad to share with you how fantastic this novel was to read! The John Puller series I think is going to be just as thrilling and suspense filled as David’s other novels.
John Puller Jr. is in the Army CID. When an Army Colonel is found murdered, he is tasked with solving the crime. What at first appearance looks to be a somewhat hard and often trying case to solve turns out to be just the tip of the iceberg! John ends up in a small town in West Virginia that looks like its dying a slow death, but what occurs thereafter is the uncovering of decades old trouble with new antagonists. On top of that, John’s father is in a home being cared for because his mind is slowly losing ground and his brother is in jail for treason.
The author weaves a thriller that includes the military, local law enforcement, civilians and a government cover up. The case could be the last one of John’s career as he isn’t getting help to find those responsible for the Colonel’s death and bodies are starting to stack up as John comes closer ever so slowly to the final piece that will expose the danger to America!
The next book in the series is titled, The Forgotten, which I cannot wait to start to see what case John will be working and where! I hope you take time to really enjoy this suspense thriller because it is well crafted and there are surprises in the plot I never saw coming that were brilliantly inserted! There is no sex in the book, which I am always grateful for and just some use of foul language. However, the story is what will draw and keep your attention until the very last page and emotionally packed ending! Read and see!

I received an offer in an email for some David Baldacci books through Kindle Unlimited. I never read any off his books before. I love Mystery & Suspence so I took a chance with an author I want sure if I would like or not. I chose Zero Day & Memory Man. Although John Puller is my favorite, I liked Amos Decker as well.

I enjoy David Baldacci's writing style, I love the character & the book kept a great pace. Usually I can figure out, right away, who the villain is and where the plot is going. I enjoyed not knowing, the suspense & being surprised. I also liked the mystery and the story.

I like David Baldacci's writing so much I bought the rest of the John Puller series, I couldn't put them down! I am hoping for a new Puller book soon. I am also waiting for the 2nd Amos Decker to be released so I can purchase that. I am trying to figure out what David Baldacci series to try next.

I am a 42 year old female, but I found out my parents really like Baldacci books when I was telling my mom about these new books I have been buying. I think my boys, 22 & 19, would really like them as well.

Classic Baldacci! Nobody does character and plot quite like him. Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy are some of my favorite narrators. They were absolutely flawless.

John Puller is similar to Will Robie in that they both work for the government, yet in different fashion. Robie, is a government sanctioned hit-man working behind the scenes. Puller also works for the government as a member of the CID, criminal investigative division. It's hard to say which is more lethal, but I might give the edge to Will Robie. Puller definitely wins in the "detective" department although Robie can hold his own as well. Puller is also very perceptive, intuitive, bold with the military background to back it up. Both are exceptional characters and a pleasure to read.
