I’d never seen James standing side by side with anyone taller than himself before Akira, I realized, as he shook hands with the other man, who stood a good two inches taller than James. He was an intimidating man, but God, was he a sight. He had classic Hawaiian features, with thick dark brows over handsome brown eyes, and a generous mouth with a mean twist. I want to know because of Lana The next leg of the flight was longer, though sharing a spacious private jet with James for eight more hours was no hardship. Then there is Ian, the family’s next generation, and far too sure he knows the difference between right and wrong. By now it is the fifties, and the world has changed-a little, but not enough. Taut with apprehension, surprising us with moments of tenderness and humour, The Other Side of the Bridge is a compelling, humane and vividly evoked novel with an irresistible emotional undertow.

As we approached the George Washington Bridge, I saw a thunder-storm over the city. Looking at Sunset Boulevard at three in the morning, I felt that my terror of bridges was an expression of my clumsily concealed horror of what is becoming of the world. A strong wind struck the car the moment we were on the bridge, and nearly took the wheel out of my hand. It seemed to me that I could feel the huge structure swing. Halfway across the bridge, I thought I felt the roadway begin to give. I can drive with composure through the outskirts of Cleveland and Toledo- past the birthplace of the Polish Hot Dog, the Buffalo Burger stands, the used-car lots, and the architectural monotony.

Detective Jefferson Daniel Lewis has the unenviable task of hunting for a serial rapist and murderer who has a taste for wealthy women. Tiffany Barrows, wife of millionaire businessman Zachary Barrows, has been marked as the killers next victim. Lewis suddenly finds himself acting as her bodyguard as well as lead investigator in the case. Still, he relentlessly chases down every clue and soon finds that some of them point to a policeman. Not just any policeman, but Captain Karl Thomas, Commander of the Homicide Division and a man with a messy divorce in his past. Lewis pushes on, only to have his world crumble: first a suicide note from a suspect hed cleared confessing to the murders and a good friend beaten and left for dead, then a shocking, public revelation that hes having an affair with Tiffany Barrows. Shamed and pushed into a corner, J. D. Lewis is suspended from the police department and wonders if anyone will believe him when he says the killers still out there.
