Having read three books by Jodi Compton, this being the most recent, I was enthusiastic after reading the first two (Sympathy Between Humans & 37th Hour) because they were very different from others I've read by female authors of crime/mystery books. Now working as a bike messenger in San Francisco, Hailey keeps a low profile, until her high school best friend Serena Delgadillo makes a call that will turn her whole life upside-down. The first book in the Hailey Cain series, 2010. However, I want to note that Hailey’s reflections on the history of the Golden Gate Bridge are largely derived from Tad Friend’s article Jumpers in the October 2003 issue of the New Yorker, a fascinating piece that also inspired the documentary The Bridge. JULY 4. The moon rises over the mountains of central Mexico, a nearly full moon in a sky the deep blue of an hour past sunset.

Hailey Cain has a history of testing the limits of her fate: as a fearless bike messenger on the twisted, competitive streets of San Francisco; as a young female cadet in a sea of men at West Point. But Hailey also has secrets--the biggest of which led her to leave the academy just two months short of graduation, two months away from becoming a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Now, scraping and fighting her way through life, Hailey finds focus only when she's in motion. When an old friend from her former life in Los Angeles calls in a favor, Hailey doesn't have to think too long before she accepts the mission. She will escort a young Mexican woman across the border to a remote mountain town in Sierra Madre. But what happens there will alter Hailey's life irrevocably. From the dustiest Mexican roads to the meanest streets of East L.A., Hailey finds herself ensnared in a war more deviant and ugly than any she trained for as a cadet. Deep in the gang underworld, pusued by mobsters and authorities alike, Hailey must use her instincts to stay alive--and to protect the innocent from a past that still haunts her. Awash in sharp gangland details and unrelenting in its pace, Hailey's War introduces one of the most memorable heroines in recent crime fiction. Hailey Cain is complicated, tough, and unnerving--and her journey into the depths of despair and desperation is as harrowing as it is impossible to put down.

Having read three books by Jodi Compton, this being the most recent, I was enthusiastic after reading the first two (Sympathy Between Humans & 37th Hour) because they were very different from others I've read by female authors of crime/mystery books. The main character (Hailey) was more realistic than in those others whose main characters often become quickly "shop-worn" per their " too perfect ways" or "too cute" scenarios or dialogues.

Other reviewers summarized the story very well. No need to repeat. While this book had the same positives as those I read by Compton per Hailey, the scenarios were too extreme and overdone in many places especially those centered around the "life within the gang community" and many of the relationships that ensued. I often base my review comments on my belief that many readers want books with stories that are more realistic than not.

I may well be off the track on another issue I had with the book. Because I know California geography fairly well from having lived there and having spent a lot of time there, Hailey's travel capability also seemed contrived. She's far from financially secure yet travels all over the state (back and forth from San Francisco to Los Angles -- some 400 miles+ each way) then to the upscale Gualala vacation home area -- 150 miles + north from San Francisco; then to the upscale Lake Tahoe resort area some 200 miles plus east of San Francisco. This left me wondering if this wasn't a bit of travel opportunity for the author so she could write off the business expense ... it "felt that way". Had I read this book of Compton's first, I may well not have bought another one - thus, my rating. However, because I read and enjoyed the other two, I'd give another a try.

I had high expectations for this book, which might be why I was somewhat disappointed after finishing. I love Compton's writing style, but didn't find this book as non-put-downable (yes, I realize it's not a word but it conveys my meaning perfectly) as her first two. I loved The 37th Hour and Sympathy Between Humans, and after waiting 5+ years for this next book, enjoyed reading it but was not enrapt. The whole concept of the heroine going out of her way for Nidia just didn't ring true for me for some reason, despite the perfectly plausible explanations provided in the story.

I recommend, but at a paperback price or borrowing from a friend/library - not worth hardcover price. I still look forward to the author's next book, but with lowered expectations.

A new character to enjoy - Jodi does not sugar coat her heroine's life or choices. Looking forward to the next one.

This heroine is the 'real deal'. Flawed and more flawed. Which only makes her journey more interesting....Mixes it up with the Chicano gang culture...'Macha' rather than 'macho. Lightning fast, action packed read. Deeper than most.

Hailey's War has several components of a great story but they do not quite add up. The characters are interesting and well created, the story line is very good, but the characters do not always behave in ways that make sense for who they are created to be. The back story of the LA gangs was interesting. It saves a key point for the end as a revelation but I am not sure why. I will look for more work by this author and this book is worth reading but could have been much better.

I wasn't expecting to read about gangs in LA. Compton is full of good surprises.
I have just discovered Jodi Compton. I chose ‘The 37th Hour’ just for something/someone different to read. It was marvelous…. So I next got “Hailey’s War” and will admit this book took some getting into…. Reading more pages than I normally would to get caught up in the plot/characters. But because of ‘The 37th Hour’ …. I stayed with this one.
Well, let me tell you, I am so glad I did… she is a marvelous writer with some depth. I generally stay with mystery stories/writers.. And her books are not listed at my library as being in the mystery genre…
However, she has such a different slant, with a deep mentality and also has a good mystery to the storyline… If you like something different, without being far-out… then by all means try this author … she is brilliant. I’m going for the next book ‘Sympathy between Humans’…. Can’t wait to see where she goes with it.
