I hate to look a gift horse in the mouth, but even at $0 I wouldn't recommend this novel. It's decently written and competently plotted, but tedious and frustrating to read. First of all, it's only "paranormal" because the protagonist, Tali, sees ghosts - which she resolutely ignores and which therefore play almost no role in the development of the story. She doesn't "embrace her gifts" to solve a mystery; she gets kidnapped by the killer and well, duh.

Second of all, she's a pretty dreadful mother. I don't care how irritating your teenage daughter is; when she tells you she might be pregnant, you hug her and buy her a pregnancy test. You don't snipe and then do absolutely nothing except selfishly complain about how hard she's going to make things. (Tali's almost total disregard for her daughter while cosseting her much-younger son was actually quite shocking.)

Finally, the author doesn't seem to have a grasp of child support, inheritance, custody or any of the other legal threads that run through this novel, which is detrimental to the plausibility of a novel it already takes a good deal of effort to get through.

Poor Tali is a party planner whose psychic gifts get her into trouble, especially with her ex-husband. She's determined to leave the spirit world behind when she and her two children move back to her hometown of Love, Texas, to live with Mumsie, her tarot-card-reading mom. Alas, the spirit world has other ideas for her. Her first ghost is her client, murdered in an outhouse during the party. Murder doesn't happen in isolation in Love, Texas, so Tali soon finds another woman's corpse floating in the pool at the scene of the previous crime.

As if that's not enough to drive a woman to spirits, childhood friends, smoldering old flames, and catty enemies from high school conspire to ruin each party she plans and drive her out of town. Add in a hot new man turning all the ladies' heads, and the first victims's daughter in over her head with strangers, and her plate is full. She had to become comfortable with her powers to use them to help solve the crimes and prevent a good man from going to jail for two murders he didn't commit. And keep her family safe from the evil-doers that seemed to be multiplying in the tiny town..

Tali Cates and her two children moved back to the small town in Texas where she grew up and into her mother's house after the divorce. She is trying to start an event planning business with her best friend trying to support herself and her kids. The bodies begin to turn up. The story moves steadily although there are some unnecessary detailed descriptions that cause some drag. The characters are well developed and the writing is good. Mistakes are minimal. Overall the book is OK and I did enjoy the story.

I made it about a quarter of the way through this mess before abandoning the book, and I was really sad about it. The concept seemed like a fun one: a party planning reluctant medium has a client who is murdered at her party. The client (also a "frenemy") haunts the party planner until she discovers the murderer. The problem with the book is the total lack of character development which leads one to often wonder who some of the characters are because they are easily forgotten. I may have a menopausal memory, but it isn't THAT bad! I got so tired of trying to keep minor characters straight I just had to put the book down. I decided I didn't care who killed the victim, she wasn't likable anyway and probably deserved it.

I was cheering for the murderer(s) and cast of unsavories in this book. Completely shallow cast of characters. I really cannot believe I even bothered to finish this story. I found myself skimming through quite a bit of it. I found myself cheering for all the unfortunate things happening to Tali. Her mother, Mumsie, could have had lended to the story with better character development because there is potential for her to add a whimsical and ascerbic bit of comic relief to all the awful things going on with Tali and this community. There is supposed to be a paranormal edge to this book and it was so incredibly superficial. Just a sad "oh yeah, and I can see ghosts and...I'm a witch too, but I want to be normal...waaah" is bandied around like a shuttlecock in the wind. And what the hell happened to Chaos the cat? It went missing...the characters were concerned...I never caught whether the cat reappeared safe or not. (Actually, the only aspect to the story I can admit to liking...was the damn cat.) So get this book if you like books that include a pet cat in the story line.

Interesting mystery. Would have been more interesting if the author had fleshed out the relationship between the main character and the town Sheriff. Same comment for her "gifts" that were never really identified other than she can see ghosts. But it was well written and interesting. I would read another of her novels.

A mad cap murder mystery tale with unbelievable things happening almost every minute and on every page you turn in this author's story. The basic story has so many holes in the story that you just shake your head and then you keep reading to find out what happens next. Read this with a tongue in check mind set so that the inconsistencies start to not matter so much and you can have fun with this story.
I liked the story - but Tali is divorced - he kicked her out - she has custody of the kids; he seems to be doing OK financially - and she's struggling. What about child support? And while she's worrying about buying the kids school clothes - she goes out looking for cocktail clothes for herself.
There's a story line about a legal battle for child custody - but just disappears into the ether.
What was the point of adding that to the story if you weren't going anywhere with it?
