Books by Jane Haddam. It rained in a way Gregor Demarkian hadn’t experienced for years-not only heavily but wildly, with thunder that rattled the stained glass windows on the main staircase landing and lightning that cracked across the sky like something out of the old Boris Karloff Frankenstein movie. It was only six o’clock in the morning, and it felt like the middle of the night. It also felt, as Gregor thought of it, impossible. It wasn’t the weather that was the problem, but the house.

Gregor Demarkian is such a white knight - honorable, honest, hard-working, professional - that when he arrives on the scene readers know that the baddies will get their just desserts and all will be right in the world. The writing is not the best - way too wordy and rambling - but the story and characters make up for that. If you have not tried Jane Haddam and the Gregor Demarkian mysteries and like a series that grows with its regular characters, be sure to give her a try. I would recommend going back to some of the earlier offerings in the extensive 26 book series to get a good basis for the character development.

Gregor Demarkian grew up in the Armenian-American enclave in Philadelphia known as Cavanaugh Street. Even though he left to go to college.

Flowering Judas

Jane Haddam

Twelve years ago, Chester Morton disappeared from his hometown with barely a trace and was never heard from again. For the past twelve years, his mother has kept the search for her son alive—paying for a billboard overlooking the local community college, putting up fliers around town every week, hounding law enforcement agencies. Mrs. Morton’s determination has not only made Chester’s disappearance very high profile, it’s also been damaging to her marriage, her remaining children, and herself.

Now, long after everyone else has given up hope, Chester’s body is finally found—hanging from the very billboard that has been advertising his disappearance. Chester’s corpse, however, is fresh—meaning that he had been alive, somewhere, until very recently. Under pressure and with limited resources, the local police turn to Gregor Demarkian, a former FBI agent and a frequent consultant, to find out once and for all what really happened all those years ago…and to unravel the truth buried within this very complex and tragic case.

Reviews about Flowering Judas: A Gregor Demarkian Novel (Gregor Demarkian Novels) (6):

I ordered every single Jane Haddam's book in the Gregor Demarkian series. He is a favorite of my wife's, who grew up in Philadelphia with Armenian friends (she herself is Irish), and Gregor is an Armenian from West Philadelphia. She identifies with the character, and the stories, which all tie together and develop the detective's character as they go, fascinate her. This review has to be, of necessity a hearsay review, but she has told me the plots, adventures and misadventures of Mr. Denmarkian, and they bring back memories of years past when we lived in Philadelphia.

If she likes the stories, and she is a very good judge of who and what she likes, and a sharp judge of plot and style, I will never dare go against her and I hereby give my vote for ex-FBI agent Gregor Demarkian, his friend, Father Tibor (I think that's how it is spelled) and Gregor's close lady friend, Benis. (I have heard a lot about them at the dining-room table)

A very enjoyable book. I do wonder why she always makes her female characters so emotionally warped.

I have been with this series since the beginning, and although I have some books I prefer to this new entry, I have no serious complaints. The characters are well drawn and the plot is believable and not guess-able in all its details. Gregor Demarkian fans will be glad to have this book too!

Multiple plot threads well-developed and most of the supplementary characters well-drawn. Theme of "good folks/bad folks" from the trailer park a bit obvious; would have liked to have seen more of the evolving relationship between poor girl/rich boy. Sad to see Old George fading out but sic transit gloria mundi. Characterization of Gregor somewhat lacking in charisma, maybe because Bennis was so down-played. Missed the usual interplay with the Cavanaugh St set; portrayal of Bennis consumed by interior decorating one-dimensional.

I love this author, of course. Read all of her books.

This was one of her best. She gets better and better.

A reviewer on good reads said that this book is a real "thinking person's mystery" and they are completely right. The book is not action-packed, it's no thriller, but it relies on we the complex story of a mystery with many layers. The best part of this book was wondering about how will all be solved. I admit to being completely mystified as to what the answer would be the killer(s) would be and when it was revealed, it was very satisfying. Everything fit neatly together and I could see how the answer was right there on the facts, even though I missed it. I love the characters of Gregor Demarkian and his family. All the characterizations were very well done. Some of the characters were likable, some were not, but all seemed realistic and very human.

I now want to hunt up all the other books by Jane Haddam just so I can read them - if they are all as good as this, I found a new one of my favorite authors. The only people who will be disappointed by this book are people who need action on every page. The book is far from boring, but it's a mystery and thriller. I didn't find the book slow all - but those who want constant action in their books may find it a bit slow.
