Only 2 left in stock (more on the way). The second of three Gore Vidal mysteries. In this one, public relations man Peter Sargent makes his way to the home of a senator who is planning a run for the presidency. Instead, he is killed and his house guests, including his rather randy daughter, his political aide and a couple who own a bomb manufacturer. Soon it turns out that they all have back stories but which one is the murder? Now that I have finished this one, I can actually see the progress Vidal made in writing these books.

The Edgar Box genre novels sold well and earned black-listed Vidal a secret living. That mystery-novel success led Vidal to write in other genres and he produced the stageplay The Best Man: A Play about Politics (1960) and the television play Visit to a Small Planet (1957).

In Death Likes it Hot, dashing P.R. man Peter Sargeant travels out to a posh beach community to help a wealthy socialite plan an end-of-summer party. His enjoyment of the sun, the surf, and the company of a lovely young fashion reporter is interrupted by the death of the socialite's niece: she mysteriously drowns while swimming on a crowded beach. No one suspects murder until the police find a lethal dose of sleeping pills in her system. As Sargeant watches the police's investigation unfold, he keeps an eye on the grieving socialite; the victim's famous painter husband; a suspiciously cheery brother and sister; and a garrulous tabloid columnist. Now, instead of planning guest lists, wine choices, and menus, Sargeant is faced with a killer unlike he's ever faced: highly sophisticated, devilishly clever, and just as smooth as he is.

Now that I have finished this one, I can actually see the progress Vidal made in writing these books. I really enjoyed the third one — which I read first— and really struggled with the first one that I read next because the character, Peter Sargent, seemed so over the top I disliked him immensely. And I thought all the characters in the first book were not realistic. But with the third book I got it. Still developing but Sargent was much more realistic and likable — still silly and I didn't totally get the mystery, but much more enjoyable.

Not great literature, but great fun. A romp in the Hampton's with pixelated dowagers, Bohemian artists, trust fund kids and plenty of booze and murder. Misdirects abound. Great first grad.

An old and dated book by Gore Vidal. Fun read, great characters, droll wit, and I was fooled. I'd recommend.

The book was recommended to me by the artist of the book's cover, Evan Gaffney. He knows my passion for this genre of fiction. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and read it quickly.... shoot. I thought it was very well done, visual and offered a great finish. You can smell the sea salt as you are ready...

Gore Vidal phoning it in. Vidal's contempt for the genre reeks on every page. I expected a masterpiece - how could it be otherwise. Gore spent a lifetime selling himself as America's Greatest Writer.
Highly respected United States Senator Leander Rhodes asks Manhattan based public relations expert Peter Sargent to visit him at his home. He wants Peter to help him develop his PR plan for his run for the presidency and to stay on staff to work the media.

However, the night before Rhodes is to announce his candidacy, someone murders the senator in his bed. Out of work at least as a presidential candidate's publicist, Sargent investigates who killed the respected reactionary politician. He finds a wealth of suspects with motives and opportunity to include the victim's immediate family (of which he shared a sleeper car with the victim's daughter Ellen from New York to DC), an aide and an ambitious Governor who craved being a senator.

This reprint of a satirical 1950s amateur sleuth is a fun timely tale that lampoons the cynical pompousness of the DC insiders starting with "don't call him Dusty" Rhodes (obviously not a NY Giant fan) chairman of the Spoils and Patronage Committee (both political parties can apply). Peter is terrific as he works the case of the murder of his client, which in his mind means getting into the DC dirt. Death Before Bedtime is a terrific political whodunit.
