Over My Dead Body is the seventh Nero Wolfe detective novel by Rex Stout. The story first appeared in abridged form in The American Magazine (September 1939).
Over My Dead Body is the seventh Nero Wolfe detective novel by Rex Stout. The novel was published in 1940 by Farrar & Rinehart, Inc. In Over My Dead Body Rex Stout begins to explore Wolfe's Montenegrin background. By 1939, of course, the Wolfe/Goodwin books had become an established series but Wolfe's youth had yet to be clarified.

REX STOUT, the creator of Nero Wolfe, was born in Noblesville, Indiana, in 1886, the sixth of nine children of John and Lucetta Todhunter Stout, both Quakers. Shortly after his birth the family moved to Wakarusa, Kansas. He was educated in a country school, but by the age of nine he was recognized throughout the state as a prodigy in arithmetic. Mr. Stout briefly attended the University of Kansas but he left to enlist in the Navy and spent the next two years as a warrant officer on board President Theodore Roosevelt’s yacht.

I said good-morning. I asked her if she would like a book or magazine, and she shook her head again, and I passed her up and resumed at my desk, where I was heading up a bunch of hybridizing cards for use upstairs. Five minutes later I had finished and was checking them over when I heard her voice behind me: "I believe I would like a book. May I?" I waved at the shelves and told her to help herself and went on with the checking.
Over My Dead Body book. I'm a big fan of Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe series, but haven't read one in quite a while. Wolfe and Archie Goodwin are, in my estimation, the best detective team since Holmes and Watson. Over My Dead Body isn't a strong detective story per se, but is a hugely enjoyable escapade related in Goodwin's incomparably witty and buoyant narration. Mar 14, 2014 Glenn Harris rated it really liked it.
The Rex Stout Nero Wolfe stories are old detective stories that are well written, usually without obvious conclusions and very comforting to those of us who are fans. Over my dead body pits Archie and Wolfe against at least a few categories of evils that still persist-quick profit financial types and those who would harm a society (not the USA) for their personal gain. These are old and set in New York of the past. For the history and popular culture evidenced alone, they are entertaining.
In Over My Dead Body Rex Stout begins to explore Wolfe's Montenegrin background. Stout starts to do so in this book by ringing in a number of European visitors, including some from Montenegro; the backdrop is the maneuvers of the Axis and Allied powers to dominate Yugoslavia. In the first chapter Wolfe tells FBI Agent Stahl that he was born in the United States-a declaration at odds with all other references in the corpus
