The publisher's blurb sets the scene: "Josie Prescott has begun hosting classes at her antiques shop in the cozy little coastal town of Rocky Point, New Hampshire. The next class is on building a great vintage clothing collection. When guest lecturer Riley Jordan is late, Josie begins class. She reaches under a display table for a dazzling pair of Chanel heels. and instead finds Riley's body. When it appears one of her employees may be involved in murder, Josie teams up with the local police chief to investigate, one clue and one fabulous vintage accessory at a time."

One of Cleland's many strengths is providing character background. Here is the employee mentioned in the blurb:
"Gretchen had started as a receptionist when I'd opened Prescott's. She'd moved up to chief cashier and administrative manager, and in the last month, she'd taken on a major new responsibility--managing one of our two newest ventures, the small boutique we'd added called Prescott's Vintage Fashions."
{large print edition, pages 14-15}. As the story continues, we learn more about the character's personality and physical appearance, but always there is the background.

Cleland knows her stuff and educates and entertains her readers. In this story she examines furniture, clothing and reminds us of the checklist used to appraise everything: "rarity, scarcity, condition, past price trends, current popularity and association." {page 91}.

Cleland cares about her human and animal characters. In the story we meet Hank: "a two-ish-year-old neutered male . . . a Maine Coon, a very desirable breed, known for its friendly personality and for fetching like a dog. His coloring, we were told, was called chinchilla." {page 25}. In the book's dedication she writes: "Since I was a young girl, cats have been among my best friends. This for Blackie, Stanley, Tiger, and Aubrey, love bunnies all . . . and Angela, love bunnie #1."

I like her including men's clothing in the character sketch. She does it seven times. It brings the story together with its title. Here is the victim's husband:
"He looked and moved like an athlete, fit and lithe, with a broad chest
and narrow waist and strong, angular features. His coloring showed his Nordic heritage - his hair was blond, his skin pale, and his eyes cerulean blue. He wore khakis and a crisply pressed yellow oxford shirt with the cuffs rolled up two turns." {page 114}. Interestingly, too, when speaking of her women characters, she might mention clothing, but ten times, she does note the female hair style or color. It's her way of detailing. Excellent touch.

Excellent series. Happy to see a new title will be out soon. Don't stop.
Thank you.

I've enjoyed all the books in the Josie Prescott series. It isn't necessary to read them in order, but for me it has enhanced my enjoyment. A mystery with romance and info on collecting antiques along with it. The descriptions of her environment are very detailed and gives the reader a sense of "being there".

Later, the new cat Hank discovers a very unique button in the same area. Josie works with Wes (the local newspaper reporter) and Ellis (Chief of Police) to track down the killer. A good and also quick read.
