I have read several of the V. Warshawski novels by Sara Paretsky. This is the ninth in the series, and very, very wel written

The book shifts gears though with it's smart insight into the prison system and how easy it is to abuse women behind bars. Some of the descriptions were stomach inducing. I do have to say though I loved this book, I found most of the circumstances involved to be highly implausible. I have read several of the V. This is the ninth in the series, and very, very wel written. V. -her fiends call her "Vic" is a very realistically drawn person.

Chicago-based private investigator V.I. Warshawski is driving home from a miserable party experience, when she nearly hits a young woman laying in the road. The young woman turns out to be a prison escapee and it turns out, that when the woman dies, the police would like to pin her death on V.I. That combined with the lack of straight answers V.I. gets when she starts to investigate the young woman's past, leads V.I. to dig deep into the intersection between Hollywood, business, the prison system, private security and governmental corruption. This time, however, V.I.'s investigating results in her winding up behind bars and, as usual, in grave danger.

V.I. is as hardboiled as ever in Hard Time. In fact, this book is probably Sara Paretsky's best V.I. Warshawski novel since Killing Orders. Fast-paced and filled with the type of tough-talking dialogue only hard-boiled detectives use, this book practically read itself in a few short nerve-wracked nights. Warning for the easily offended, Ms. Peretsky is not shy about working her political beliefs into her novels. While this book is certainly not as likely to enrage folks as some of her others are, there are portions of this novel that may leave conservatives shaking their heads. For me, V.I. is my guilty pleasure and this book is among her most pleasing.

This is my favorite VI mystery. It involves a lot of corruption in state politics. I'm from Illinois. I know Illinois has more corrupt politicians than any other state. Yes, we have surpassed Louisiana and New Jersey. So I was glad to see this in a book. The story is about a woman who is murdered and the trail leads the owner of a "for profit" prison that she "escaped" from. Pacing is a work of art. There's lots of action. VI never backs away from a fight, even if she is over 40. That's another thing I like about Sara Paratsky's books. The character is aging--so am I, it seems.

She never fails to give you a good read - I read some of her earlier works and then she fell off my radar when she was on a hiatus of sorts until I came across some of her books on a clearance table at a local bookstore - I bought one to catch up with her and was not disappointed, I then caught up the rest of the series with her Kindle editions. The only CON to her books is the higher than normal Kindle price - I wanted to finish the series and was glad I did BUT I feel she needs to get in line with her Kindle edition prices

Some have complained about her liberal views coming through the book - they are part of the character - I for one am glad to read something other than cookie cutter detective stories

Justice V. I️. Style! Vic makes “Justified’s” tough Marshall Givens look like Nancy Drew. She soldiers on even with every warning sign screaming at her to stop tweaking the Giants. But she may be more mellow after some leftover PTSD from this adventure. She’s developing some healthy coping skills though. Onward Angel VI!

V.I. is not a detective out of the English drawing room style. She is an original, and as such will be appreciated or rejected by the degree that you look for originality in your mysteries. The plot is deliciously complicated, hard to anticipate, and moves along nicely. Although some will quibble that the whole thing is improbable, it could be made very probable with one small change in the motives of the killers. As such, I'd have to say this is by far the most sophisticated and exciting of the books in the series. V.I. is a lot like Robert Parker's Spenser: Principle is the thing. In an age when many unthinkingly take the easy way out, it is valuable to explore what a modern Dona Quixote would do. V.I. fills the bill perfectly in this fine novel which rises above the detective genre into regular fiction. Keep up the good work!

Reading Paretsky is like going back to visit old friends. As this series progresses, I've noticed that the stories have become more socially relevant. I agree with other Amazon reviewers that V.I. taking so many physical risks in her 40's is getting just plain stupid, but Paretsky's writing and plotting is so good, it's hard to nit pick.
One thing: I started reading this series years ago. V.I. ages, but Golden Retreiver Peppy must be about 20 years old by now. Similarly, Old Lottie and Mr. Contreras must be about 100.
Nontheless, for fans of Sara Paretsky, her books are too few, and too far between. This is one of her best.

This book was one of the most intense in the series.
I was interested in every aspect VI went through. Held my interest to the end. Could not put it down.
I enjoy most of Sara Paretsky's books. I think I have read most of them.
