Just as Van Veeteren is no typical fictional detective, Nesser is no typical mystery writer. And The Inspector and Silence is no typical summer read: a Swedish vacation tale that visits the darkness with appropriate gravity but doesn’t wallow in it-all the while managing to entertain.

Chief Inspector Van Veeteren was feeling quite upset with his ex-wife, who had just tried to trap him into spending two weeks at some holiday cottage with their adult children and grandchildren. Taking the coward's way out, he announced that he had already booked a trip to Crete. Of course, he had no vacation plans whatsoever. Like his fictional Scandinavian brethren, Van Veeteren is stubborn, dedicated and irreverent. Introspective to a fault, it's the inspector's philosophical musings and observations that prove the attraction for this particular entry in the series.

In this enthralling new addition to Hakan Nesser’s acclaimed Inspector Van Veeteren series, the Swedish detective must crack a secretive and uncooperative religious sect in order to solve a string of brutal murders. When one of the Pure Life’s members is found raped and strangled in the forest near the group’s camp, the Chief Inspector is called to investigate. The Pure Life has chosen to remain silent about the incident rather than defend itself, so Van Veeteren’s only lead is the anonymous caller who reported the body. As the unidentified woman continues to assist the authorities, her knowledge suggests she’s more than just a passing Good Samaritan, but her tips become doubly perplexing as a new string of increasingly horrifying crimes defy everything Van Veeteren and his team thought they knew about the case.

At long last another book in this Swedish mystery series has been translated into English. Beloved Inspector Van Veeteren gets called to the countryside to investigate the murder of a young girl attending camp run by a wacko religious sect. In the oppressive heat, he and an interesting band of detectives do their best to sort out the murder with sect members who refuse to talk.

The mystery is satisfying; I did not figure it out in advance. But what makes these books shine is the workings of Van Veeteren's mind: how his train of thoughts bring him to leads, how he deals with the brutalities he witnesses, his wry musings about his personal relationships, and his stumbles toward retirement. I almost always discover a "new" piece of music reading a Nesser book. Van Veeteren is quite a music lover, and this read led me to Penderecki's Requiem.

If you like a meandering mystery with just enough humorous repartee and reflection, this one's for you. If you lean toward car chases, main characters with thrilling sex lives, and elaborate, twisted plots, you might want to take a pass!

Me, I'm hoping we don't have to wait years for the next translation or I am going to be compelled to learn Swedish!

Hakan Nesser has become one of my top five mystery writers with Van Veeteren right up in there as the Inspector/Detective of the moment. I feel like I am in Sweeden when I read his books. I felt this book was predictable because it was obvious who wasn't the killer Now, I only read mysteries, so I can say that I see the similarities in so many of them. However I plan to read ALL Van Veeteren books.
For a totally different concept---read The Girl on the Train and Moving Day

Good book by a literary master. I have also watched the TV series, and while I enjoyed the six episodes, the books are better able to enunciate DCI Van Veeteren's musings as he works toward finding the killer in his own inimitable way.

I have persevered with this series and will continue to do so but in the hope that VV leaves, gets killed off or by some form of Devine intervention becomes an interesting character.
If the next instalment is as lifeless as this one I am done. It really was a struggle and I was relieved to finish it.
Leniga
Not as good as the previous books. Found it long hard going in places. Possibly over descriptive and over elaborated in places. If this was my first time to read a Van Veeteren, it would likely be my last. Will try the next one in the series and make up my mind then.

What I am most drawn to is the character - his thoughts, and insights...
moody, thoughtful, not too dark... and amusing

Good read. Got a little bogged down in places, but overall it was a very enjoyable read. Keeps one guessing "who did it" right to the end, however there were some obvious clues, I never try to guess who the villain is, that spoils the whole joy of reading. Love these books by Hakan Messer.
Wonderful author another great book
