He's innocent, of course, and wife (and former cop) Clare is out to prove it. Meanwhile, Chief Inspector Pitcher continues on the murder case, mostly a matter of wrestling with ality Sir Guy Frensham, whose smarmy son seems to be extremely guilty of bludgeoning an unpleasant widow.
