A moment later he was lurching down Tulip, cursing his bad leg. He veered into the weeds, the beam of his flashlight probing the night, homing in on the shrill cries is eyes shut and his flashlight. He veered into the weeds, the beam of his flashlight probing the night, homing in on the shrill cries is eyes shut and his flashlight thrust upward, its pitiful beam vanishing mere inches above his head into the black vastness. John barked and took hold of him; impossibly, the screaming got louder. The boy fought, flailed his flashlight. Only when John pinned his arms and gathered him in and smothered him to his own body did the boy release his terror and sob, Mommy

Eggs is a quirky and moving novel about two very complicated, damaged children. David has recently lost his mother to a freak accident, his salesman father is constantly on the road, and he is letting his anger out on his grandmother. Primrose lives with her unstable, childlike, fortuneteller mother, and the only evidence of the father she never knew is a framed picture. Despite their age difference (David is 9, Primrose is 13), they forge a tight yet tumultuous friendship, eventually helping each other deal with what is missing in their lives.

Eggs is deep. Don't let the 8 year old protagonist fool you into thinking this book is for 4th graders. I will use it with my 6th graders. True to Spinelli's style, the characters are flawed but beautiful. Nice symbolism with the eggs. Motherless kids need each other!!

Jerry Spinelli understands troubled kids so well. Most of us have forgotten what it was like to be a kid. Jerry can remind us. Anybody who has any affection for children will find a lot of joy and satisfaction out of this or any other of his books.

I bought this for my son who actually read it in school and was touched by the story. He told me about it and so I decided to give it to him for Christmas! He loved it and can't wait to read it again!!

What an unusual book! The main characters--David, a 9 year old who just lost his mother due to an accident and Primrose a 13 year old who doesn't know her father--develop an unusual relationship best described as friends who love and hate each other by turns. The plot has many twists and turns as it slowly reveals more and more about each character. The ending, while unexpected, is satisfying and thought provoking. Another winner by Jerry Spinelli.

This book explores how a boy copes with the sudden death of his mother. The fears and rigid rules that form his life give way as he shares experiences with a friend. It is both humorous and heartfelt. I recommend this novel
I love the book, its hard to put what I like about it into words so you'll have to read it I guess.
