Home Henning Mankell Shadows in the Twilight. Translated by Laurie Thompson. These were the thoughts whirring around in Joel's head one afternoon in September, 1957.

The ground was totally white. He stared out of the window, scarcely able to believe his eyes. It was the beginning of June. Today was his last day at school. Today was his last day at school bout sunshine and joy and ‘All things bright and beautiful’. And the ground was covered in snow. A thought struck him. One he’d never had before. Perhaps it was the snow, which could sometimes fall in June, that had driven Mummy Jenny away? Perhaps she simply hadn’t been able to stand it any more? All that cold and darkness and snow that wouldn’t go away, despite the fact that.

I'm adding my rating to this book based upon a couple of other low reviews. If ever a book underscores the reason for these book reviews, this is it. I regrettably didn't check these out in advance.

One of the prior "2" reviewers questioned if this were a story written for young people; another noted they "couldn't get into it". Per the latter comment, I am with that reviewer 100%. I did not finish the book. Per the other commentary, in the first few pages or on the back as I recall, it is noted that it is intended for a younger readership but I didn't know that in advance. It also has some of the same elements of another book I read by Menkell that I thought was "quite odd" per one of the main characters. This explained that in restrospect.

If there had been a way to categorize this book more obviously per intended audience, I expect it may have had/have greater receptivity.

What's not to love about Henning Mankell. The only book I didn't like of his in his entire repertoire was Depths and couldn't finish it. All of his other books have been wonderful but I am a special fan of his Kurt Wallander Mysteries. Read that series starting in sequence from the first book because it follows the character's life. Even the teen series books by Mankell are great.

Love all Mankell's writing. More for a teen reader but fascinating to an old woman. So sad to find that Mankell has passed on and younger than myself. sigh

You have to read all four of the novellas in this enchanting series by Henning Mankell. You'll fall for Joe Gustafson as he tries to understand the adult world he is about to enter.

Absolutely adore Henning Mankell books. They are on a par with Agatha Christie. He, along with Jo Nesbo, a Norwegian Author and Henning, a Swedish author, are unbeatable?
Mankell's books are always winners for me. Just an opportunity to drift off for a few hours into another world - much like watching a film - and generally written well in translation.
