Opposing Viewpoints essays"The only way in which a human being can make some approach to knowing the whole of a subject is by hearing what can be said about it by persons of every variety of opinion and studying all modes in which it can be looked at by every character of mind. It is a book that is part of a volume of viewpoint books. It starts off with a debate with violence, asking if it is a key factor in society.

Shortly after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Congress passed a complex, 342-page bill-the USA PATRIOT Act-to help the government fight its war on terrorism. Since the bill was signed on October 26, 2001, the Patriot Act has become the subject of intense controversy. The authors in this anthology present differing views on whether the Patriot Act protects national security, violates civil liberties, and whether it should or should not be expanded. (20020801)

This 2005 book contains both "pro" and "con" essays from a very wide variety of people, including (former) Attorney General John Ashcroft, Michelle Malkin, George W. Bush (!), Thom Hartmann, etc.

One essayist laments, "The USA Partior Act became law in less than a month, without any hearings. Now that we know it was passed under false pretense, Congress should repeal it just as quickly. And the Bush administration should rescind the policies that diminish our civil liberties, until we can get an honest assessment of what went wrong in the months before Sept. 11." (Pg. 43) Another regrets, "It is hard to believe the Act could have been drafted, debated, and passed in only 45 days... The vast majority of Americans never ever heard of it at the time." (Pg. 78)

Another essay notes that the law's definition of a "terrorist organization" could encompass "every organization that has ever been involved in a civil war or a crime of violence, from a pro-life group that once threatened workers at an abortion clinic, to the ANC [African National Congress], the IRA [Irish Republica Army], or the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan." (Pg. 49) Another suggests that it might also include Greenpeace, Operation Rescue, the Environmental (sic) Liberation Front, protests about Vieques Island, and protests at a meeting of the World Trade Organization. (Pg. 79)

Another essayist points out that "When we decide... to expand surveillance powers to track terrorists, ALL residents, not just the terrorists, are affected." (Pg. 148)

This book is a really EXCELLENT way to get some opinions on this controversial legislation.
