I was nervous that this book would be too high level because I am a professional programmer, and am pretty technical. What I was looking for is something to give me a good base knowledge of linux. I have used linux in the past but my knowledge was spotty becuase I never read a book on it.

Some of the chapters in this book I did skip because they explain how to use certain software, which for me wasn't useful, but i can see its worth to someone switching from windows and wants to learn to use openOffice as well as MS office.

This book also had some more advanced topics in it and I feel this information made the book worth it for me. I feel it did a good job in giving me a good base knowledge of linux.

Though, as of june 1st, 2006, the included CD in the book will not be the latest Ubuntu release. Ubuntu is always free, however, and can be downloaded from their site.

Although I have not completed reading all that I need, the book lead to a flawless installation of Ubuntu Linux on a completely locked up computer, even giving me the choice of replacing Windows or installing Linux as a "duel boot" operating system.

Even though I have not yet found how to make myself "root user" so I can download other applications, I use this old desk top as much as I use my new notebook computer.

For a person who uses their computer mostly for 'web surfing' and e-mail, this is a great alternative to Windows to replace a corrupt operating system with most needed tools such as Open Office as a word processor being on the included CD.

Basically everything that you need to expand your computing skills to a new level, even as a 70 year old with only basic computer knowledge. "Beginning Ubuntu Linux" has made a dreaded task fun.

I had installed Slackware Linux 12 years ago. Wow Linux has come a long way. Back then I had to initiallize nearly every component in my computer individually and manually. With today's Ubuntu, it was all automatic.

I recommend this book to any first timer looking to run Linux. I haven't used any unix commands since college mainframe days (10 years). This book and this distribution of Linux require no previous unix command line knowledge.

I was up and running in no time. If one never looked at the file system, they would not know the difference from Windows, just different program names.

I did have a problem repartioning my drive with the latest version. So I had to flip the disc over and use the older (more tested) version, just as the book sugested.

The title says it all: "BEGINNING Ubuntu Linux". It really is about using Ubuntu Linux as a substitute for Microsoft Windows. There are advantages to doing so, namely cost. Ubuntu Linux is free.

Ubuntu has gained popularity because it is a straight-forward installation, a welcome relief to many people who have previously tried to install Linux or are simply accustomed to the sort of hand-holding insallation of Microsoft products (when nothing goes wrong).

Keir Thomas tries to cover a lot of territory and therein is the major weakness of the book. Linux, the operating system, by itself is a huge subject. Add to that sections on the BASH Shell, running various forms of multimedia, OpenOffice and a few other subjects and guess what? Nothing is covered in great depth. Usable, yes. But not great depth.

Also, Thomas has a slightly idiosyncratic style. This is particularly bothersome in chapters where he is dipping into more or less pure Linux, such as using the BASH Shell. The examples can occasionally be a bit hard to follow, though they all eventually do make sense.

Overall, for the inexperienced Linux user who is seeking a replacement for Microsoft Windows and Office, "Beginning Ubuntu Linux" is worthwhile. For the person seeking a more extensive knowledge of Linux, per se, there are better books available.

This is an excellent book for beginners of Linux/Ubuntu. Has detailed instructions on installation and usage and system maintainence. I wish the DVD were a little more up to date though. However, that is no big deal as almost all things Linux can be downloaded from the internet.

This book is great for both beginners and professionals as stated. It starts from installation and is easily read. You can skip chapters if needed without getting confused. Great information on getting started in the BASH shell.
For a first time user of Linux, I found this book to be very useful. It helped me to begin to understand the language and terminology of the Linux community.

It is a good "teaching" book.

Purchase is well worth it.
