Since you're reading this review, I gather that you have managed to successfully navigate to Amazon and are considering making an online purchase. Congratulations! If you are able to complete tasks of similar difficulty, like using a keyboard, running a program, and finding information with a search engine, you already know everything in this book.

However, let's just imagine for a minute that you don't know how to get onto Amazon or use Google. Well, guess what!? This book manages to teach you how to do that in a mere 920 pages! That's longer than any world history text I have ever used. They manage to fit the entire history of civilization into fewer pages than this book.

If I had to choose between using this textbook and getting hit in the face, I would choose getting hit in the face. It's less painful and cheaper.

This book is what it is, a 1000 or 1001 class book. People have to start learning somewhere. I would guess it is something that is much more work for the author to write then to read. The stuff is very very basic in this book but it had to be done. I have had other books by Shelly and they are very good and helped me a lot.

i like what i bought. All the pages are still very clear and readable. but the book looks real old. seems like it has been used by very many people

Good Book for those new to the technologies. Overview only, nothing really in-depth, plenty of history, bios, timelines. Some information however is dated and some flat out wrong (the books networking chapter has errors that may have been corrected in later versions.) If taking a beginning Computer Science class at a college, this book is just as good as later more expensive options.

This book is an overview of how computers are used in society, business, personal use etc. Lots of detail and discussion of related themes associated with the various chapters. Extra detail at end of each chapter that goes into depth, links are given to help with additional research of the topics. The web site associated with the book is quite interactive and helps with absorbing the information. None of the chapters go into intense depth but are simply an introduction for a first semester college student. Lots of information though. If you read the entire book you will have a high level grasp of the use of computers.
It's a text book not much to write about. Needed it for a class, book was ok and fit the purpose.
