Close to the Wind is Goss's story. He starts with the years of preparation as a merchant seaman and skipper on one of the 10 yachts in Chay Blyth's British Steel Challenge. He describes how he attempted to get sponsorship but was constantly rebuffed and he discusses the hardships he faced-nights spent sleeping on platforms before business meetings because there was no money to spare for a room. This was a very well-written book as Pete Goss takes the reader into his life and onto the Aqua Quorum as it battles .

This was a very well-written book as Pete Goss takes the reader into his life and onto the Aqua Quorum as it battles the wind and water while various parts break down. I had read about Goss's rescue of French sailor Dinelli in Derek Lundy's book Godforsaken Sea but it was good to hear about it from Goss's point of view. Close to the Wind: An Extraordinary Story of Triumph Over Adversity. Thrilling story of sailing and rescue from international hero, Pete Goss.

Pete Goss became a national and international hero when he rescued French yachtsman Raphael Dinelli as his boat sank beneath him in the round-the-world single-handed sailing race, the Vendee Globe, on Christmas Day 1996. On November 3, 1996, former Royal Marine Pete Goss embarked on the most grueling competition in his sailing career: the Vendée Globe, a nonstop, single-handed round-the-world yacht race. For the next seven weeks he met every challenge in his stormy path, from combating waves the height of six-story buildings to grappling with his spinnaker in high winds. Then everything began going wrong: His sails were destroyed, his navigation equipment proved useless. And on Christmas Day his radio picked up a Mayday that a French competitor was sinking 160 miles away. Turning into the hurricane-force winds, Goss set out to rescue a near-dead man on a life raft somewhere in the vast wilderness of the merciless southern ocean. How he did it makes this extraordinary tale as amazing as it is thrilling.

Pete Goss has the reader enthralled. His passion and determination for sailing, racing and achieving the most difficult of goals is palpable. It is difficult to put the book down as each section has its own impetus and nerve wracking challenges. Readers will be in awe of what round the world sailors endure in pursuit of their dreams. A great read.

An amazing story and worth a read by any avid sailor. Goss is an adverturer/sailor, though, not really much of a writer - excellent sailing yarns, but not literature.
An avid sailor recommended this to me, and it delivers. Goss is a tough guy who got to the top the old fashioned way, with a lot of hard work and perseverance. His story about a great sailor with a great boat putting it all on the line is a great read.
