I couldn't make it through the year without the insights provided by Peter H. Spectre and the Mariner's Book of Days. I purchase the Mariner's Book of Days every year and enjoy the pieces of flotsam and jetsam that Spectre delivers daily. There are weekly bits of history and reportage that fill the pages which will delight anyone with a nautical bent. And every year, as I travel the days with Mr. Spectre, I wonder at the incredible amount of sea history and information that fill the pages of the Mariner's Book of Days, and, how Mr. Spectre compiles his material without ever seeming to repeat items.

While I also have given a review for Mariner's Book of Days 2014, I can use the same expressions for every one of the publications that I have treasured over the past several years. They are great, and useful as well as informative, books. And, the binding conveniently lets them lay flat for easy access for writing.

I've been a fan of the Mariner's Book of Days since it first came out and it just keeps getting better. This is the one nautical desk diary and calender I keep beside me on my desk at all times and I use it a lot. It is complete with Peter Spectre's outstanding job of collecting fascinating nautical tidbits, facts, historical thingees and miscellaneous observations as well as displays often enchanting old-time etchings and pen-and-ink maritime artwork. It keeps me connected with my boat and the boating world. -- Marlin Bree, author, Wake of the Green Storm, In the Teeth of the Northeaster, Broken Seas, and the Dangerous Book for Boaters.

The Mariner's Book of Days provides an excellent day calendar and is also loaded with interesting nautical facts, notes and trivia. I have enjoyed the The Mariner's Book of Days for 11 years and still find it a useful and fascinating calendar. I have used many of the hints and processes listed there during my sailing days, as well as learned quite a bit of interesting nautical history and tidbits. Anyone interested in boating or sailing should enjoy this calendar. I have even had people not interested in boating or sailing (my brother in law) enjoy its commentary. Finally, I usually give a copy of it to some of my close boating buddies and they have really appreciated it over the years.

So, it's another desk calender. But for those of us who would rather be afloat than in our corporate brigs, this one brings a bit of sea air to the room. My first one was given to me many years ago and was a delight. Since then, a copy for the next year was on my Christmas list and if disappointed, a search party was commenced.
Each page covers a week, with an historic event for each date but still enough room to schedule voyages and working parties, and even some minor trivia like birthdays and wedding anniversaries. The verso page is full of potpourri nautical; quotes from books and famous people, how-to advice, cooking, notable voyages and storms, delightful woodcuts. However, one must have self-discipline to enjoy it for the whole year. The temptation is to read it cover to cover when first received, producing trivia overload and dulling the experience of discovery when the real time comes. In fact, I have reread them looking for a forgotten fact and recently was able to identify a "Final Jeopardy" quote as from John Paul Jones, from a past issue. This is a great gift for your sailing friend, who might even invite you for a sail in return.

I buy this every year for my husband. He not only likes using it to record daily activities, but as a lover of the sea, he thoroughly enjoys reading the daily historical information. He would be most upset if this wasn't one of his birthday gifts every year.

I give a 5 star rating because I cannot think of anything I should miss more were I not to get the current one each year. These pages do far more than measure the passing year and track my appointments; it keeps me entertained and educated with the bits of history and lore, the facts and factoids, on every page. And I haven't even mentioned the illustrations!
This day planner is totally in black and white. There is no photography, just prints and drawings. The paper is thin. The written content is for the most part interesting. For the price, I think photography and color should be included. Nothing can match the beauty of boats under sail, but you won't find that here.
