consider myself an intermediate sports bettor. Like other reviews have said, there is no magic forumla given in this book. It is a MUST for beginners, but I always want a new method to try out. He bases his picks off analyzing statistics in a clear and concise manner. If you want some major revelation this is not the book for you, but if you want a good starting point then I'd definitely recommend

This book provides some basic concepts that the author expands upon for each of the 60 picks. Each pick is discussed alongside a statistical chart for both teams so that the reader can see which statistics were used to make the pick. The focus is on defense and rushing and the examples provided have helped me improve my winning percentage from 50 to 55%. I especially appreciate the author posting his picks on his website, it gives him a sense of legitimacy and it shows he stands behind the methods of his book.

This book does a decent job of explaining the basics of how to evaluate a college football game and gives a decent overview of types of games to avoid. That said, if you're looking for some sort of statistical method this book is sorely lacking that as the author basically uses a rudimentary process that's very much more of an art than a science. And oh, by the way he only claims a 67% success rate... which sounds good unless you consider that when placing a bet the typical "juice" rate is 10%. As a result, if you followed his techniques to a tee you'd only net 7%. Not that great a performance if you asked me.

In any case, I bought this book hoping to gain some additional insights and I was left wanting more as it merely reinforced what I already knew. Might be an okay read for beginners who are making their picks purely based on gut feel today, but for anyone else it might be painfully basic.

There are not a lot of good books on college football handicapping, so this title is above average almost by definition. The author does a good job in laying out what he looks for in a good bet and then gives 60 examples over a single season. As amateur, going through the 60 examples was very educational and made the book worth the cover price. I now feel I can look at a matchup and make an educated decision about whether a game is worth a bet.

On the downside, the author doesn't do a good job in explaining when a spread is too high to bet on a favorite. Sometimes it's easy to see that Team A will dominate Team B, but is Team A a good bet when they are favored by 29 points? There are no easy answers to that sort of question, but the book does not address that topic at all.

One word of caution -- be careful when looking at the author's posted record on his website. He has a habit of changing game lines when the spread moves to his advantage, often without informing his readers. (For example, he will pick Team A at -3 points one day but when the line moves to -2.5 later he will change the pick to be at -2.5) Amazingly, when the line moves against him he always managed to get the better number when it was available. Over the long-term these "corrections" add up and inflate his overall record.

The author gives a very basic and easy to follow book. I consider myself an intermediate capper, but I am always willing to look at things from different angles. What the author does here is bring it back to the basics.

Beginners to the game will find this very beneficial. The concepts shown are quite simple and easy to follow. He lists every bet he made and why he made them.

The author though does give himself a bit too much credit when things go his way. He needs to understand the concept of variance (which, looking at his website, hit him hard last year).

Recommended for people looking to start out, or would like some pointers on the basics.

This is the best book I've ever read on handicapping football. It tells you how to make picks against the point spread based on sound statistical analysis. Statistics for 60 match-ups are displayed and the author explains what he looks for in these statistics to pick out point spread winners. The book has pointed me to some winning bets and, just as important, it has kept me from losing money on bad bets that I may have made before reading the book.

I have always wanted to place bets on college football games but until I read this book, I was at a loss. I am actually placing bets and winning enough money to keep me interested. My husband has always been the one to bet but after reading this book, I have given him some tips to use. Guess what he will get for Christmas this year - his own handicapper book.
This book offers up some basic theories that are obvious to all semi-experienced football bettors. Over the years I have read quite a few handicapping books, and this was probably the least beneficial. I would recommend this book to a beginner, but not to someone who already knows how to read a boxscore.
