Paddy Crerand's eagerly-awaited autobiography recounts the previously untold story of one of post-war football's fieriest characters

Paddy Crerand's eagerly-awaited autobiography recounts the previously untold story of one of post-war football's fieriest characters. As a defensive midfielder, famed for his tough tackling, for Scotland, Celtic and Manchester United from 1957 to 1972, he was the Roy Keane of his day and this book holds nothing back on or off the field. As a Catholic born in the then infamous Gorbals area of Glasgow, Crerand was determined to escape from an extraordinarily tough background of family tragedy, religious bigotry and working in the Clyde shipyard, to become a professional footballer.

Other people at the club began to notice me and were pleased with my progress The fans booed us off the pitch after that game and had a go at Kelly and the other directors

Other people at the club began to notice me and were pleased with my progress. Celtic offered me a professional contract worth £9 a week at the end of the 1957/58 season. It was far more than I had been earning at Fairfield’s Shipyards, but the money didn’t matter, I just wanted to leave that place as much as I wanted to play football full-time. The fans booed us off the pitch after that game and had a go at Kelly and the other directors. Legend has it that one fan, upon hearing ‘Off to Tipperary in the Morning’, over the public address system, shouted: ‘If they give me the fare I’ll not wait until the morning. I’ll be off on the Irish boat tonight.

Recounting the previously untold story of one of soccer’s fieriest characters, this eagerly awaited autobiography takes readers through the career and personal life of a man who escaped from an extraordinarily tough background, dealt with a family tragedy, and faced religious bigotry. Crerand’s life story is a genuine triumph over adversity told from the perspective of someone whose informed opinion on Manchester United and soccer in general is as respected today as it was 40 years ago.

Reviews about Paddy Crerand: Never Turn the Other Cheek (2):
Foginn
Funny, inspirational and honest. Of most of the footballers autobiographies I have read, this is one of the best. Paddy is very honest in his book, and it looks like he is trying to tell his story and not just sell books in numbers. Recommended.
Gholbirius
One of the best football books I've read and I read a lot
