I am a fan of Kara Louise’s books. I read this one shortly after it was published but just now finished re-reading it so that it would be fresh in my mind for this review. It is a sequel to Assumed Engagement but can be read as a “stand alone” novel. There is little angst and no bedroom scenes. Kara does not write those. There is romance but little of the sexual chemistry some like to read of between couples.

This story begins with Elizabeth’s and Fitzwilliam Darcy’s honeymoon in Paris. While there they look into a school for the deaf and make arrangements for the one teacher and his family and adopted deaf daughter to move to Derbyshire to help build and organize another school for the deaf. Parallel events concern Georgiana’s coming of age, her first season, and her discovery of love. Here Darcy finds that his thoughts about class differentials have not been put to rest. He struggles to make sound decisions and offer wise advice but will love win out?

Many of the actors we know are present. Kitty resides with ODC much of the time and decides she prefers to be called Catherine. She and Georgiana become friends and giggle over issues many teen-aged girls have been giggling over for centuries. We learn of Mary’s situation and Wickham pokes up his head, of course. There is a kidnapping and a rescue. Little is said about Lydia other than a mention or two.

I found the use of the deaf school an interesting issue brought to the foreground, as I have also recently read a story online in which Darcy was, himself, deaf. The treatment of that class during Regency times was portrayed as those unfortunate souls being ostracized as mentally ill or as the result of misdeeds by the parents or as idiots. This book handles it much more gently.

Having read the first, I thought this one would be....more. I did not care that there was not a bunch of 'scenes' as sometimes that gets way overdone, but it almost lost Elizabeth as a satellite character to Georgiana and Darcy's struggles with her growing up. I concur with some of the reviews that this is not a wholy bad concept. I think that the school for the deaf was a BIT of an overfocus, though they needed a central point of focus for the myriad of characters, it was not so very consistent with the times and a single member of the 'ton' I think, though I believe the world would be better off if many with the means to give time did as noted here. It was not poorly written, there was a distinct path with almost no surprises due to the alegory nature of the writing, but it was worth reading through the end of the book to its happy conclusions.

I believe I've read all of Kara Louise's books, and have enjoyed them all. She's a talented writer, and keeps my interest when ever I read one of her stories. After uniting them in "Assumed Engagement," she continues their story in "Assumed Obligation" with their honeymoon to France, and their involvement in seeking help to start a school for the deaf near Pemberley. This story shows the compassion and kindness of Darcy, and how his character continued to improve.

My only critical remark would be that she doesn't always stay in the language of Regency England, and uses modern words which are a little distracting to me.

I would actually rather give this 3+ stars, just short of 4. I always enjoy reading Kara Louise stories, but in this case I had not gone a quarter into this and I already knew exactly how it would play out. Mr. Wickham and Lydia get different story lines but nevertheless they end up in similar ways as in the original. Most everyone is happy at the conclusion, and our couple triumphs through love.

Kara Louise is probably my favorite JAFF writer. She comes up with great stories with romance that is not vulgar.
I loved the way Darcy was portrayed in both this book and it's companion 'Assumed Engagement.' I also love how both Lizzy and Kitty evolve into their new roles - Lizzy as a new wife and Kitty as a young woman. Good job, Kara!

I really like Georgianna as a character in Jane Austen's novel and Kara brings her out even more in this one. One thing that we are missing from the original Pride and Prejudice is danger. Sure, Wickham runs off with Lydia, but who really cares anyway? Also, when Darcy finds Wickham and Lydia, it seems Wickham is too lazy to have planned anything truly evil.

*spoilers*
In this tale, Wickham's menace can be felt throughout the tale. Poor Gerogianna, not knowing who to trust, falls prey to him. But, I love the rescue and I think it was important for Darcy to come to know Georgianna's love in the way that he did. The fact that Darcy went against his "expected" family path to marry Elizabeth helps him understand Georgianna's wish to marry someone she loves, but the rescue really seals the deal. And in this tale, he is orchestrating the placement of someone he likes instead of someone he despises!

I also felt touched by the deaf school angle. It was nice seeing Darcy have a heart and the fact that Elizabeth can join in with this task is fun. I really liked seeing Georgianna and Kitty become friends.

Most enthusiastic thumbs up from an author I just found this year and have already read all her works!

I loved this book! I am on my second read. My only remark other than that this was a terrific book, was that it ended tooo soon! Kara, please give us more of the happy ending. I have purchased all of the authors' books. I can not say enough about this book. Darcy's character grew throughout the book. Georgiana's character evolved into a thoughtful, gentle young lady. What can I say about Elizabeth, but that she was wonderful with Darcy and Georgiana. She was right on the money regarding her sister, Lydia. I had hoped that Mr. Bennett would adopt Lydia's son as his own and prevented the take over of Longborn from Collins. It was good that that he was able to retire to Pemberly. I loved the ending with David, I thought that he was a wonderful character. Bringing in the segment regarding the school for the deaf, was a good idea. Just a great book!
