ZOYA by DANIELLE STEEL. a literary phenomeno. mbitiou. rolifi. nd not to be pigeon holed as one who produces a predictable kind of book. Steel is one of the best. There is a smooth reading style to her writings which makes gg easy to forget the time and keep flipping the pages. The Pittsburgh Press.

In typical Danielle Steel fashion, leading character, Zoya, is a strong, determined, beautiful woman who must face and overcome many challenges and obstacles. The writing was somewhat "flat" and when characters died I didn't feel any emotion.

Zoya had said something about it to her mother one day, and the Countess had been outraged and forbidden Zoya to mention it again. It was most emphatically not a suitable subject for young ladies. But her grandmother had been less austere when she'd brought it up again, and said only in amused tones that the woman was a very talented dancer. Do you still dream about running away to the Maryinsky? She hadn't mentioned it in years, but Marie knew her well, well enough to know when she was teasing and when she was not, and how serious she was about her private dreams. Reviews about Zoya (7):
This book is like raisin bread- nice when the raisin's around, boring the rest of the time.
There are some funny moments, but the rest of it is so-so.

Tell me, what does this heroine look like again? All I recall are her thundering... no, not thighs,.. cheeks! Okay, so she has fat, hanging cheeks. What else? What, other than her cheeks, does anybody find appealing in her? She's immature, insecure, obstinate, jumps to conclusions, has big hang-ups about where she lives, how she talks, her origins, her looks, her clothes... it's like reading about a teenager.

So yeah.. if she'd been 17, it would have been like The Princess Diaries or any of those teenage novels. However, since she's a decade older, she vacillates between being annoying or childish.

About the rest of the book: premise is good; many of the descriptions of cricket-mania are spot on; many of the secondary characters are well-developed.
Pity about the heroine.
This is actually my 4th time to read this story - I have the paperback copy at home and the movie.
This is a classic that I can read over and over.
Wonderful story full of history and suspense - love and heartbreak - and rebirth.
This book started off a bit slow but certainly picked up quickly. I had a very hard time putting it down. So much just keeps happening to poor Zoya. You can't help but life this person right from the start. All she achieved with all the obstacles never kept her down great book would highly recommend it
Great cheesy read despite the shaky hold on history and overlength (could have cut everything between Clayton's death and going to work at the shop).
first few chapters were slow, dull, ordinary even silly. As story progressed it was more interesting due to good historical content with interesting characters most of the time. Main character Zoya was not always believable. good reading but not memorable.
Longitude Temporary
It is easy to imagine the time and places that Zoya encounters through this book. It encompasses the entire 80 year life of a woman who is strong, yet loving. If you haven't seen the Lifetime movie with Melissa Gilbert, wait until after you have read the book (although the movie stays fairly true to the book). This is a good book for a young teen with a penchant for historical novels.
Like- story intertwined with cricket.
Bad- too lengthy and meaningless
Very predictable ending
The author should have better clarity of thoughts.
Zoya is one of Danielle Steel's best novels. It is a sweeping, historic story that begins with the Russian revolution and continues into the 1060's. Zoya is such a great heroine going from a wealthy Russian countess, to in impoverished refugee, wealth and riches again and thenthe great fall of 1929., Even with all of her tragedy she still manages to overcome.
