Exploring Jennings’ book, Good News to the Poor, I will argue that Wesley opposes the increase of riches, proposes a preferential option for .

This book is a fantastic new perspective of John Wesley, particularly regarding his economics and the social and political convictions he had for the Christian life. While it is certainly a biased reading, it is heavily reliant on direct quotes from Wesley.

Theodore Jennings's book "Good News to the Poor" is disappointing at best. Jennings has little or no grasp of the historical person of John Wesley or his context and in an attempt to make Wesley fit within a Liberation theology framework creates a "Wesley" that is not historically accurate. Wesley's Anglican heritage is but a footnote to Jennings's analysis because it does not fit the Liberation model.

The fact that Jesus was born to a poor couple in a cow stall tells us something about the way God meant to reach the world. God has not waited for us to get it all together here.

This provocative volume illuminates a dimension of John Wesley's theology that has received insufficient attention: his deep and abiding commitment to the poor. By focusing on the radical nature of Wesley's "evangelical economics," Theodore W. Jennings, J. provides an important corrective to the view that Wesley was concerned with the salvation of souls only, and not also with the social conditions of human beings.
