Coyote is a trickster. Coyote medicine is when something that is wrong, backward, or hurtful is actually a healing lesson. I thought this book was going to be about that. It's not. It's about the author's circle back to his indigenous roots and embracing the energy within himself. He calls it "coyote" because it's a blend of modern/ western with traditional. It's an interesting story. I think that people who have no insight into indigenous cultures or spirit medicine will find it enlightening.

Perhaps it's not fair of me, but I gave it 4 stars because it wasn't what I thought it was and the information is not new to me so it wasn't as entertaining or informative as it would be to a different audience. If you are in need of a bridge, this is probably a good place to start.

Western culture has a whole lot to learn from the First Peoples and their medicine. What I liked the most about the medical philosophy held by the author is that he brings EVERYTHING to bear when fighting disease. If you are going to go on this journey with him, you need to get out your crystals, magnets, antibiotics, ceremony, drums, animal guides, vision quests, mindfulness, yoga, chants, massage, diet and more. Neither health, nor illness, is a one dimensional, linear affair. He gets that and treats his patients accordingly. I would imagine more than one person married to western ideas about health has walked away from this physician and called him crazy. To me, coyote medicine is the only way to practice medicine.

When I finished reading Coyote Medicine, I felt like I had to say goodbye to an old friend. Lewis opened up his heart and soul giving the reader insight into Native American healing techniques. I wish he lived in California, because I'd love to learn from him. I had been looking for a Native American Shaman to mentor me in my healing business then this book appeared from Spirit to guide me on my journey. I will read his book again to make sure that I incorporate everything that he shares. I highly recommend this book for anyone to read...not just healers. There is a message for all from Spirit!

started reading & just had to buy a copy for a loved one & recommended it to other people --especially those in or considering the medical field. lots of things wrong about USA health care & it is written about well in this book. it reads like philosophy-poetry-theology & history and human interest...so much to keep me involved. a great book & i am inspired to buy others from this writer--which is rare for me to even consider.

This came to me after someone "saw" Coyote around me recently. I have been in sweat lodge and ceremony once and it made me crave to be there again with a new understanding of the medicine Coyote brings. It is a beautiful protector and learning of its ways in healing, which has been the journey I have been on even more deeply after coming out of emotional abuse, I embrace it for its survival energy and still laughing in the face of it all. Lewis Mehl-Madrona brings this beautiful work in a time where people are trying to remember who they are and where they came from and how they can heal to bring the best gifts back into the world through the purpose of service.

I bought my first copy of this book while traveling and this was a gift. It's an amazing story of a doctor and his struggle to merge his native American heritage and belief with traditional medicine.
