The Arts United Center in Fort Wayne is one of Louis Kahn's lesser known projects and his only in the Midwest. Only one part of his expansive design was built. Kahn’s original proposal encompassed a philharmonic hall, art school, gallery and civic theatre bound together in a large complex. Yet, troubles began early in the project as the architect’s 20 million dollar estimate dwarfed the expected . million dollar cost of the Fine Arts Center. From 1961 to 1964, while also completing the Richards Medical Center at the University of Pennsylvania, Kahn and his office worked a series of schemes for the expansive project.

Louis I. Kahn, a Premier Modernist Architect. During his training at the Pennsylvania School of Fine Arts, Louis I. Kahn was grounded in the Beaux Arts approach to architectural design. As a young man, Kahn became fascinated with the heavy, massive architecture of medieval Europe and Great Britain. But, struggling to build his career during the Depression, Kahn became known as a champion of Functionalism.

Built with ‘the invitation of books’, Louis Kahn’s brick masterpiece is an essay in ‘authentic monumentality’. It required instead the reconstitution of the programme in the light of what the institution primarily is with respect to the cumulative human experience of using it. With this archetypal Form in mind (to use Kahn’s enigmatic terminology for what inherently prefigures and informs that which most architects would in fact call ‘form’), then Design of particulars (Kahn again) is legitimately possible.
