Elizabeth Lyon's heart's desire is to help writers get published. All of her books reflect her year's of experience as a writer and editor. This Guide to Nonfiction is no exception. It is an aid for both beginning and experienced writers and includes easy to follow guidelines, recommendations for further reading, and priceless "maps."
She helps the writer navigate via her Writer's Compass. "Creator of words: Celebrate the process...appreciate the wonder of it all."

Overall, I thought this was a good survey of non-fiction writing and technique. Lyon is a really clear and conversational writer, and I appreciated how she lays out the essentials of writing in any of the non-fiction genres. I found the troubleshooting section, which distills these essentials into a checklist, to be particularly helpful.

However, the book is a survey, and it doesn't go farther than that. If you're looking for in-depth analysis and strategies for a particular genre of non-fiction writing (essays, magazines, etc.), I would suggest buying a book that targets those genres specifically. But if you're a novice non-fiction writer who needs an overview, or if you've been informally writing for a while and would like to manage your writing better, this is a good pick. Overall, it's a 101-level book, but it's a good 101-level book. If it had writing exercises, I would have given it five stars.

Once you are interested in publishing your non-fiction writing, I recommend Lyon's "Non-Fiction Book Proposals Anybody Can Write."

I loved the book when I first read it in the year it was published. I gave that copy to someone years ago. Now that I'm returning to writing nonfiction again I ordered it again. It definitely didn't let me down even the second time around. The information, the support, the ideas and generally timeless.

A Writer's Guide to Nonfiction: A clear, practical reference for all writers of...by Elizabeth Lyon is the most comprehensive guide to nonfiction writing I've ever consumed. Inside these covers you discover definitions for every type of nonfiction writing and practical advice on how to write every type of nonfiction.

A Writer's Guide to Nonfiction follows a North, South, East, and West directional guide. We start at North with "Getting Your Bearings." This section discusses organization of ideas and understanding your audience. South offers advice on how to correct problems in leads, organization, conclusions and style. To the East is marketing and walks the reader/writer through cover and query letters and proposals. Finally, in the West Ms. Lyon's shares her ideas on brainstorming and gaining perspective in your writing.

While all of these ideas have been discussed and dissected by countless authors, Ms. Lyon, in her straight forward, approachable writing style, makes sense of the world of nonfiction writing in the easiest and most understandable methods possible. Her clean, concise prose are themselves a model for nonfiction writers.

As my main income for many years has been from writing nonfiction, I was delighted to find myself in agreement with the author of this nicely written book. Beyond that, I was entertained and enlightened. Who knew there were still some things I hadn't already conjured up about this topic? ;-)

This book is fairly straight forward, but the language style is not really for seasoned writers. It can be a bit fluffy. This is probably best for an undergrad writing course, or for someone who is somewhat new to these types of non-fiction genres. Might be better to check the library or a used bookstore for a copy rather than pay for a new one.
