92 Acharnon Street - John Lucas. I was forty-seven years old when, in August 1984, I began a year of living in Athens. From early adulthood I’d wanted to go to Greece, but for a variety of reasons every plan fell through, and during the infamous period of the colonels’ junta (1967-74) visiting the country was simply not an option. Then, early in 1984, came an invitation to spend the academic year 1984-5 as visiting professor in the English department at the University of Athens. The details of how this came about and its consequences I leave until later.

92 Acharnon Street is a gritty portrait of a dirty city and a wayward country. This is Greece as the Greeks would recognise it, seen through the eyes of a poet.

John Lucas (born 1937) is a poet, critic, biographer, anthologist and literary historian. He runs a poetry publishers called Shoestring Press, and he is the author of 92 Acharnon Street (Eland, 2007), which won the Dolman Best Travel Book Award in 2008. Lucas was born in Devon in 1937. He has taught English at universities throughout the world, and is Professor Emeritus at the Universities of Loughborough and Nottingham Trent.

Greece has always had its admirers, though none seems to have cherished the Athenian tavernas, the murderous traffic and the jaded prostitutes, the petty bureaucratic tyrannies, the street noise and the heroic individualists with the irony and detachment of John Lucas. '92 Acharnon Street' is a gritty portrait of a dirty city and a wayward country. Yet Lucas' love for the realities of Greece triumphs- for the Homeric kindness of her people towards strangers, for the pleasures of her table and for the proximity of islands in clear blue water as a refuge from the noise and pollution of her capital city. This is Greece as the Greeks would recognise it, seen through the eyes of a poet.
