Most writing books I've read can sit comfortably on a scale with "Technical" on one side and "Inspirational" on the other. James Thom's "The Art and Craft of Writing Historical Fiction" definitely leans toward the latter, and that's not necessarily a bad thing if you know what you're getting into. Now, I love reading historical fiction and I wouldn't be surprised if I decided to write a book someday in the classical manner, taking fact checking and verisimilitude (a word Thom mentions often) to the nth degree. But for my current project, I'm not looking to focus on actual recorded events or people.

I wrote the book to encourage historical literacy and by that I also mean historical curiosity. The way we are taught in school often discourages an interest in history because there is such an emphasis on memorisation of dates and names. It doesn’t stimulate curiosity. I wrote my book with the expectation that people will use it as a springboard to stimulate their curiosity about American history.
