JOE THEISMANN was the winning quarterback in Super Bowl XVII, a two-time Pro Bowl player, and the most productive quarterback ever for the Washington Redskins. In 1983, he was voted MVP of both the NFL and the Super Bowl. He co-hosts ESPN's popular NFL Countdown and Primetime.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Understanding Football.

Dec 03, 2011 Ashley rated it it was amazing. Recommends it for: Anyone who wants to learn more about football (duh). Theismann did a great job covering the basics (though I was a little annoyed the he literally started with what the ball looks like) and got into some more complex things like game strategies, play diagrams, etc. I considered myself fairly knowledgeable about football, but really learned a lot from this book. It was full of facts (which I love), history, and lore. While the writing left a little to be desired at times, overall I love football - college moreso than NFL - and this was a great read.

Let me say this: I am female who loves some football! I purchased this book because I was both playing and had coached a women's football league-and needed to know the X's & O's of the sport. This book is written by the best and is very clear to understand. It breaks down the point of football-beyond just scoring-mixed in with some great tidbits of history. I would say this is a great book to read for a casual fan looking to up their pigskin prowess, as well as for someone who already understands the game but is looking to go to the next level. Now mind you, you aren't going to become the next Vitale or Lombardi after reading it but you'll come away with a new level of knowledge and respect for the game.

You never quite know how good a "dummies" or "Idiots" guide will be until you dig in. Like the nursery rhyme, some are too much, some are too little, and a few are just right. Put this book in the latter category.

Covering items as varied as the 4-3 Over defensive line alignment and tailgating foods, Theismann and Tarcy entertain and inform in such a way that even fans that are somewhat knowledgable about the game will likely enjoy the book. Written with the casual fan in mind, this book may be a bit "too much" for the complete novice, and certainly an expert in teh game will not gain a whole lot here. However, if you are a casual fan, or even a bit beyond that and looking for more insights into a fascinating game that has captivated America - this is a good book to read.

I became a football fan at the beginning of last year's season. I learned a lot just watching football and asking some questions of friends. This year, I wanted know more about the game and this book, even though it is several years old, was full of easy-to-understand information about the game. (I have used the Idiot's Guide books for other subjects and always like them better than other formats).

After reading just a third of the book, I was able to have meaningful conversations about a game that others watched - I'm a Monday morning quarterback! And I get respect from the guys when I comment - well, their eyes are surprised a bit at first, I'm a woman. When they came back the next week for my views on Sunday's games - I knew I'd spent my money and reading time well with this book. (And it was written by one of my sister's all-time favorite quarterbacks!)

I love football and know all the basics. I watch on Sundays from afternoon to the evening game.
This book started out as an introduction to someone that knows nothing about the game. I wanted to learn about the play patterns, X's and O's
The book certainly can accommodate fans at any level of understanding. Easy read and entertaining.
I have my copy on the couch right next to me! Really a valuable manual.

I bought this for a friend who knew nothing about football. Idiot's Guides tend to be very good or very bad and this one definitely scored high! This book is fast paced, interesting, and filled with knowledge. It is careful not to assume that you know anything about football, perfect for beginners, but is also entertaining enough for veterans. A really great overview of the game.

Bought this for my German brother-in-law, who loves the book. It brought a whole new dimension to the game for him.

I ordered "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Football" because I'm just that; an idiot who never took the time before to learn the rules and how the game was played. Thankfully, I'm getting wiser as I get older and now have more respect for the Friday night gladiators who risk life, limb and gray matter for the love of the game and the adoration (or chagrin) of the fans. I want to jump up and down on the sofa or throw popcorn at the TV screen and know why I'm doing it. "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Football is humerous, interesting, informative and written in plain English that any idiot such as myself can understand. I definately recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn more about the sport. Oh....and the book arrived promptly and in very good condition as prominsed.
Nice book to learn about American football
