Reviews about A Photographic Atlas for Physical Anthropology (7):
Mr.Champions
The Photographic Atlas for Physical Anthropology is a gorgeous reference for students and professionals. The authors starts from the basics, with the definition of primates, and work their way to more specialized aspects of physical anthropology. Each page has crisp, well diagrammed color photos of the chapter subject. Accompanying these photographs is a straight-forward and/or table which helps clarify the pictures. Most impressive to myself is the fact that it is not simply extant primates within this text. Many of the recent ancestors and relatives to Homo sapiens are covered as well. There are even helpful side by side photos for comparative anatomy. One of my especially favorite sections deals with palaeopathology. The photos here give an excellent idea of the many ways a person can intentionally or unintentionally modify their morphology. In my opinion this text is the best handling of a very broad subject. It will be a cherished addition to any aspiring or active primatologist, palaeopathologist, palaeoanthropologist, forensic anthropologist, osteologist, premed student, or bioarchaeologist.

*The loose-leaf format is also brilliant because it allows you to add articles about a subject right where they belong. This is especially important with the speed at which most of these disciplines develop.

You have to buy a 3 ring binder for it, but the pictures are perfect. Has a great range of non-human primates, apes, and some popular early hominids.

I ordered this book as an assigned text for my biological anthropology course. But, being quite the nerd when it comes to bones, I knew when I received this that it wasn't a book I would be passing on or selling to someone at the end of the class. (I actually spent about an hour just slowly going through the book, gazing at the pictures.) Being an atlas, 95% of this book is pictures. The pictures in this book are not only great quality and really quite thorough, they are also well labeled. I can't wait to start using this in my class.

This book was recommended for my class. It has been a huge help with all of the crazy classification names.
Anyone that studies Human anatomy should buy this book. The photography is fantastic and the text is extremely well written.
