Only 9 left in stock (more on the way). Feminist Disability Studies is a particularly solid collection due to the wealth of cross-genre essays and contributions housed within its pages, and its contributors draw from women’s studies, literary and cultural studies, ethnic studies, philosophy, and many other disciplines. collection is a fascinating and valuable contribution to our thinking, and comes at a crucial point in the consolidation of feminist bioethics' engagement with disability.

Disability studies is an academic discipline that examines the meaning, nature, and consequences of disability. Initially, the field focused on the division between "impairment" and "disability", where impairment was an impairment of an individual's mind or body, while disability was considered a social construct. This premise gave rise to two distinct models of disability: the social and medical models of disability

First, however, I will outline the book's contents; without discussing all the contributions in detail, it is important to give a taste of the breadth and scope, not merely of this collection, but of feminist disability studies as a whole.

Disability, like questions of race, gender, and class, is one of the most provocative topics among theorists and philosophers today. This volume, situated at the intersection of feminist theory and disability studies, addresses questions about the nature of embodiment, the meaning of disability, the impact of public policy on those who have been labeled disabled, and how we define the norms of mental and physical ability

Disability, like questions of race, gender, and class, is one of the most provocative topics among theorists and philosophers today. This volume, situated at the intersection of feminist theory and disability studies, addresses questions about the nature of embodiment, the meaning of disability, the impact of public policy on those who have been labeled disabled, and how we define the norms of mental and physical ability. The essays here bridge the gap between theory and activism by illuminating structures of power and showing how historical and cultural perceptions of the human body have been informed by and contributed to the oppression of women and disabled people.

Reviews about Feminist Disability Studies (3):

This text is an excellent interdisciplinary exploration of disability studies and particularly how to theorize disabilities AND what ethical concerns arise in our advocacy. It has enriched my scholarship and I find the essays accessible for students, inlcuding undergraduates.
Samuhn
My favorite essays were on chapters 8, 10 and 11, as well as the introduction. Gives a new and convincing perspective on how both feminist and disability studies can complement each other on diverse issues such as the category of Fat and Deaf as well as the context and the social issues which concern early feminist movements. I don't give it more stars cause I don't feel all the essays were as stimulating.
Tolrajas
I found this book less useful to my studies as I had hoped. I think it played the victim card too much to be useful in academic research. However, if you are a disabled woman you may be able to relate and find it insightful.
