Not for me, deleted it.
Legend 33
Poorly written, and seems to be peppered with inaccuracies (perhaps memory lapses on Norman's part?). A bit gossipy, but none-the-less interesting. I would suggest investing in a used copy.

I had never heard of Norman Borine before seeing this book in a Palm Springs bookstore, but was convinced by the owner to buy it because of all the interesting stories contained within. It is too bad that Borine passed away before the book was finished, because with the help of a good editor, this really could have been a gem. Instead, this book leaves more questions than answers and really makes the reader wish that Mr. Borine was still alive to find out more. On the plus side, dancer Borine was at MGM during the height of the musical, and worked with the best: Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Cyd Charisse, Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball. His stories of the auditions and the sometimes grueling ordeal of filming a musical are wonderful to read; and his pain at finding his best work on the cutting floor is also on the page as well. Borine stays positive and upbeat though, and mainly has happy memories of his serendipitous fortune of having worked with the best. Some of the best stories in the book feature outspoken leading ladies Betty Hutton & Lucille Ball.

On the negative side, the majority of the photo reproduction is poor, looking like it was done on a xerox machine. Some of the photo selections are a little curious as well; there are a number of "Wizard of Oz" stills included. This is a film that Borine didn't work on, and although he was fond of it and Judy Garland, it does seem odd that there are so many poorly reproduced photos here. One shot of Garland from "A Star is Born" mistakenly labels director George Cukor as makeup artist Del Armstrong. The photo is not rare, and has been reproduced in several other books. The miscaption and poor reproduction only adds to the "rushed" appearance of this book.

There are other photos that seem to be randomly included as well, such as the one of Rudolph Valentino, who has no other mention in this book. Strangest of all though is the photo of a woman named Alexandra Bokhara. The caption states that Borine married her in 1940, yet Borine is clearly gay, dropping the names of a few male stars that he slept with, such as Hurd Hatfield and James Dean. There is no explanation as to why he would have married Bokhara or anything else. Things like this would have really benefitted from an editor to go back, do the research, and fill in the gaps.

Overall, for musical and film buffs, Borine's stories are worth reading. If given the choice of having a polished book versus what the reader has now, I would definitely choose to be able to read this rough editiion. Hopefully at one day someone can step in and fill in the gaps of his life.
