Rudolf Bahro (November 18, 1935 – December 5, 1997) was a dissident from East Germany who, since his death, has been recognised as a philosopher, political figure and author. Bahro was a leader of the West German party The Greens, but became disenchanted with its political organization, left the party and explored spiritual approaches to sustainability. Bahro was the eldest of three children of Max Bahro, a livestock-industry consultant, and Irmgard Bahro (née Conrad)

Iwould like to start by discussing my book’s point of departure and purpose. Its original title was ‘A Contribution to the Critique of Socialism as it Actually Exists’-perhaps somewhat old-fashioned. Now this is simply the subtitle.

A preliminary point about it is that Bahro proceeds from the premise that there does exist a desirable socialist alternative to ‘actually existing socialism’.
