I taught college-level logic for nearly twenty years. During that time the department used several editions of Hurley's text, culminating in the eleventh edition. I soon came to realize the value of this text, especially in comparison to some of the others I examined. It contains a wide variety of material (from informal fallacies to categorical propositions and syllogisms, from propositional to predicate logic, from analogical reasoning to probability and statistical reasoning), which makes it appropriate for both symbolic logic courses and critical thinking courses. It contains a large number of exercises at the end of each section, with answers to every third entry found in a key at the back of the text.

While the Hurley text has been updated several times, the changes from one edition to the next have been minor, and generally are confined to small improvements and clarifications.

The Hurley book came within a week, a bit better than expected.

Except for packaging, which left an impression of work performed in a hurry, all went well with the book delivery process. The book I received was new and in good condition when it arrived.

The book is fairly straightforward, easy to read and does not penetrate the subject as deeply as many pedagogical textbooks do, especially those involving concepts of Mathematical Logic. Much of the logical symbolism and symbols, e.g., logical operators, are treated toward the end of the book as a more advanced topic since the first few chapters are dedicated to an introductory treatment of Logic in general, especially for the uninitiated.

All in all - nice book introducing Logic and its concepts to people who are unexposed to the subject, or never studied it formally.

Great book! Most college textbooks are a SNORE, but this one proved tremendously useful for me. It gave great examples of arguments, fallacies, and how to solve proofs. It really helped me understand the concepts more efficiently.

The used copy that I received contains only the first seven chapters. If you use the "Look Inside" feature and check the Table of Contents, you will see that there are 14 chapters. I'm not sure how you can verify that you're getting the complete book when you order a copy.

This book was recommended to me by a former professor who has extensive background in the teaching of logic of logic and language. Having four other texts dealing with this subject, I often consult different books when searching for differing examples. The C.D. Rom that accompanies the Hurley text is a great source for review and practice, and certainly one of the best parts of owning the book. I only wish other books, dealing with various topics would have C.D. that accompany them.

The textbook seemed to be more helpful at explaining topics than my philosophy professor so it is definitely better. I was able to learn philosophy well from reading this textbook and practicing the examples after each chapter. If you ever get a bad professor, just read the textbook and you're going to be fine.

I was afraid that the book, which is required text, would cover these topics in lieu of the history of philosophy. But the book has selections, covering significant logicians, much like a history textbook would. I wanted it brand new and it arrived very quickly, stuffed in a box with another order, and one corner is straight creased <--blah ... but the book itself is reviewed here, not the smashed packing job, so I must say: this is a 5 star textbook.
Very useful for my college class! Easy to understand along with the help of a professor
