Discussions of social theory in archaeology have, until recently, been very .

We could stop writing archaeology books and write science fiction instead - dream of the future. One great problem with the future is that it has an annoying tendency to always create new pasts. However, typologists know THEORY AND METHOD IN ARCHAEOLOGY 9 their megaliths in just the same sense as witch hunters know their witches: both are social creations.

Archaeological theory and method have recently become the subject of vigorous debate centred on the growing realization that archaeological theory is social. In this analysis, Shanks and Tilley argue against the functionalism and positivism which result from an inadequate assimilation of social theory into the day-to-day practice of archaeology. Aimed at an advanced undergraduate audience, the book presents a challenge to the traditional idea of the archaeologist as explorer or discoverer and the more recent emphasis on archaeology as behavioural science.

Your fifth book, Shanks and Tilly’s Reconstructing Archaeology is part of the post-processual movement. The same team produced Social Archaeological Theory and that carries it on. Some of it is very Frenchified and theoretical – impenetrable playing with words rather than ideas

Your fifth book, Shanks and Tilly’s Reconstructing Archaeology is part of the post-processual movement. Can you tell us a bit about the field? Post processual archaeology is very much to do with the application of postmodernism to archaeological thought and the study of the past. Some of it is very Frenchified and theoretical – impenetrable playing with words rather than ideas. But some of it is extremely interesting.
