Looking for Dilmun book. Danish archaeologist Geoffrey Bibby. Dr. Bibby first penetrated the fog which surrounded the ancient civilization of Dilmun

Looking for Dilmun book. Bibby first penetrated the fog which surrounded the ancient civilization of Dilmun. Archaeologists were aware that Dilmun existed within the Persian Gulf region from various sources, notably the prehistoric mythical epic of Gilgamesh (late 4th millennium . and cuneiform tablets of traders in Ur who imported copper ingots from Dilmun and paid for them with exported wool, grain, and manufactured goods in the 3rd millennium . Transportation was by. ship.

A brief season's digging was enough to establish the existence of a major civilisation dating from around 2300 BC. Thus began an undertaking to reveal the extent of Dilmun, a land which stretched beyond the confines of Bahrain, as far north as Kuwait and as far south as Saudi Arabia.

Geoffrey Bibby was a Cambridge-educated oil executive, who got caught up, against-all-odds, with the tiny Danish Prehistoric Museum of Aarhus, with barely any resources, that nonetheless has emerged as a powerhouse in ancient Dilmun studies, thanks in part to Bibby's initial efforts. As he writes in this book from 1969, "Four thousand years ago the "Lost Civilizations" of Dilmun dominated the road to the Indies, the tradeways between Mesopotamia and the civilizations of the Indus Valley. And for fifteen years it has dominated my life.

A well-written, first-person archaeological journal published by the late Danish archaeologist Dr. Geoffrey Bibby. He first penetrated the fog which surrounded the ancient civilization of Dilmun. Archaeologists were aware Dilmun existed within the Persian Gulf region from the epic of Gilgamesh and cuneiform tablets of traders in Ur. Dilmun had never been found until Dr. Bibby excavated and identified Dilmun strata at tombs, a fortified city, and a temple in Bahrain and a temple on Kuwait's Failaka Island. He went south to the U.A.E. and Oman, where he was first to excavate and identify the similarly long-lost Magan civilization, Dilmun's supplier of copper ingots transshipped to Ur and elsewhere. Bibby then surveyed Saudi Arabia near the Gulf and excavating below the Dilmun layer, found its predecessor was the Ubaid culture—already known to be the predecessor of the Uruk culture in Southern Mesopotamia. Bibby’s writing style is lively, personal, colorful, and appeals to the five senses. His story includes complex interactions with many Sunni Arabs, and he illuminates these individuals with excellent characterizations.

the book focuses on the patient work required and done. the interpretation is good and confirms to accepted standards in archeology. the long years of work done without loosing perspective is truly impressive and a fine example of goalstructuring a task. it is a must for all who want to know the prehistoric past of the Arabian world. the vivid descriptions make you live the moments of discovery as experienced by the expeditioners.

Geoffrey Bibby was one of the first explorers of Bahrain and the first modern archaeologist to dig there. He and his partner advanced far beyond the handful of predecessors who had surveyed the island previously and discovered the remains of a Sumerian civilization there. There is still much debate over some Bibby's findings in peer journals but what can be agreed on is that the civilization of Bahrain extends back into remote antiquity.
Rather than giving away more details of the book I will finish by stating that Bibby's account is a non-technical reading of his achaeological dig at the mysterious grave-mounds of Bahrain. The only thing he assumes that the reader knows is a general history of the ancient near east and he takes time to explain the finer details when they are relevant. Overall an easy read, especially if you're interested in ancient near eastern history.
