I now understand what it is to be a surrealist. If only all art books were a. ell, as surreal. As an addition to a library on Surrealism, Surrealists, or 20th century Paris, this book may be worthwhile. I would not recommend it, however, as a primary source for understanding the movement of or the people involved in Parisian Surrealism.

Paris And The Surrealists book. A beautiful photography book with text by George Melly and images by Michael Woods. Melly transports us back in time discussing his time in Paris and the Surrealists accompanied by the beautiful black and white images of Paris at it's most Surreal. Max Ernst and Andre Breton are two of the artists discussed here.

Alan George Heywood Melly (17 August 1926 – 5 July 2007) was an English jazz and blues singer, critic, writer and lecturer. From 1965 to 1973 he was a film and television critic for The Observer and lectured on art history, with an emphasis on surrealism. He was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, and was educated at Stowe School, where he discovered his interest in modern art, jazz and blues, and started coming to terms with his sexuality.

In his Paris and the Surrealists, George Melly remarks of the tower in passing that during one discussion about embellishing Paris, it was proposed that ‘only the top half be left. Enigmarelle, foppish robot staggered out of an exhibition guide: Enigmarelle was a freakish machine figure with ringletted hair and a vacuous wax smile. The Surrealists were fascinated by the Man of Steel, supposedly created by the American inventor Frederick Ireland in 1904, and popular in vaudeville.

George Melly narrates the history of Surrealism and describes his love affair with the movement and its native city.
