California State Fair - Carson Hendricks. In December of 1849, Peter Burnett became the first United States Governor of California. According to them, fairs were common in the eastern portion of the country and were seen as a way to develop the resources, both agricultural and mechanical, of an area. Kemble and Durivage had much more to say on the subject.

Having been born and raised in Sacramento where the California State Fair has been located for most of it's life I was really glad to to purchase this book. It gives a complete history from the beginning of its existance up to modern times. There was a lot of information I hadn't been aware of prior to reading this book. Lot's of pictures to go along with the text. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of the California State Fair.

Regrettably this is not a history of the State Fair - it is a series of briefly annotated photographs. If you need to know more about the history and social-political atmosphere surrounding the fairs you'll have to look elsewhere, or write your own book! Seriously, the introduction is great but that's pretty much all you get.
Jugore
Nice vignette of a formerly-pinnacle event in California's time-line. Portrays California when it was a wonderland, not just another failing European-style welfare state.
Olma
Nice book but it does not have the things I remember - the annual special exhibit or much on the traveling carnival. In fairness the fair was a bit different every year.

My daughter has artwork from the CA state fair. She enjoys going to the fair. Good pictures. Makes you appreciate the volunteers who make the fair function.

This book tells about the interesting history of the CA State Fair. Here is some of the information in this book: In December of 1849, Peter Burnett became the first United States Governor of CA. He pointed out the potential dangers to a state built upon a single commodity which in this case was gold. The first official CA State Fair was started on October 4, 1854 in San Francisco. In 1861, Sacramento was chosen as the permanent CA State Fair site. Cal Expo has been the site of the CA State Fair for more than 40 years. Bruener's Furniture was founded by John Bruener. The State Fair was not held in 1915 due to the Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. Some of the past performers at the CA State Fair have included the Everly Brothers, Mel Torme, and Buck Owens. The midway continues to be one of the main attractions at Cal Expo. Cal Expo uses about 350 acres and has room to grow.
