Cuba TV. by Simone Lueck. During broadcast hours, all TVs in Cuba are on, no matter if they are being watch or just serving as background noise. The actual television sets are outdated relics imported from America or Russia close to twenty years ago. Convulsing static pictures in off-color hues, the sets are jury-rigged with computer parts and other discarded technological talismans; they are adorned like religious altars.

Cuba TV By Simone Lueck Mark Batty Publisher, New York 80 Pages . ? . inches Color Casebound. And now for a completely different take. Out with the scenic old building, out with the beautiful young people and out with the ballet dancers, old cars, tobacco, Tropicana dancers?. It would seem that a book showcasing Cuban televisions ? and not the programs but the television sets themselves would be somewhat limiting. Actually this book is absolutely illuminating and brilliant in its inception and execution

I guess one could call Simone Lueck lucky. Congratulations on the wonderful book, Cuba TV, and the accompanying exhibition that just opened at The Paul Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles

I guess one could call Simone Lueck lucky. Yes, she got a call out of the blue with an offer for a monograph of a project shot a decade ago, and in a year’s time has had two major solo exhibitions at The Paul Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles, and a solo show at the Musée de la Photographie, Charleroi, Belgium. Congratulations on the wonderful book, Cuba TV, and the accompanying exhibition that just opened at The Paul Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles. How did the book come about? I made these pictures in 2000. Since then they have been floating around online and featured in several blogs notably BoingBoing and other pop culture sites.

In Cuba, television is the most important communication medium and a national pastime. These intimate and captivating photographs show how television sets fit, literally and figuratively, into contemporary Cuban everyday life. During broadcast hours, all TVs in Cuba are on, no matter if they are being watched or just serving as background noise.

The TV sets themselves are outdated, pre-revolution relics imported from America or sets from Russia over twenty years old; green-hued beasts jimmy-rigged with ancient parts and fantastically adorned like religious altars. The stations broadcast news reports, baseball, educational programs, telenovelas, and Hollywood movies. Whether used for information or as a background for socializing and drinking rum, during broadcast hours, all TVs in Cuba are ON.
