Reviews about The Working Singer's Handbook (2):

there's some good advice for the singer just starting out or even with a bit of experience, but this is definitely not for someone who's been singing professionally for a while...most of the advice is common sense and some is downright silly...sing like you have a Pinocchio nose and imagine your head having a flap that opens up or a clothesline attached to the back of your head! these images are just plain laughable...I doubt they actually work for anyone...and the countless repeating of the recommendation to drink water...also, finding a professional singing coach/teacher is stated many, many times...
the author really doesn't have much of an insight on microphones, although she writes about them...or should I say, writes about the Shure SM57 and SM58...these are both useful mics for bands starting out and are used in the studio (workhorses), but a professional singer who's not a screamer, might want to try some of the other mics out there that blow the SM's away...like the Neumann KMS 105 or the Shure KSM9...these are 2 the mics that a pro singer would use if they were serious about their craft...the author talks about investing in the right equipment (like the guitarists and drummers do), so why mention cheap mics? I've been singing for over 30 years and haven't used the SM 58 for the past 15...
all and all, a quick read with some helpful advice, but again, basically for the beginner or someone with limited experience...
there's some helpful advice about posture and breathing, but for the most part the book is just about things that most professional singers already know or should know...telling readers to try the Alexander method is good advice...then why bother writing a book that talks about what to eat when touring and silly imagery?

Roma Waterman covers so many of the questions singers have about their voices that I had to include this book on the recommended reading list for my adult beginner class at UCSD.
Her easy to read approach is accessible to even the most inexperienced singers, while her practical advice for the professional is based in a good solid knowledge of the voice and the 'industry'.
Ms. Waterman has really compiled a valuable source for all singers.
