Good book from mega rock star and business genius Gene Simmons. Just a heads up, DONT expect to agree with all his advice). This book is split into two sections: Part 1 Me Inc - which covers Genes upbringing, stupid mistakes he made, life as an immigrant, and how he became successful. Genes story and sincere gratitude really helped me put things into perceptive. At the close of the book Gene states "If the only thing this book does is change what you take for granted, make you reassess your life decisions and remind you that its all up to you to make you successful than I have done my jo. This book definitely did that for me. Highly recommend.

The fact that KISS is one of the most successful rock bands in the world is no accident. From the beginning Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley had a clear-cut vision of what they wanted to do and how they wanted to operate KISS as a business well before they ever first took the stage. Since deciding with Paul to manage the band themselves, Simmons has proved himself to be a formidable businessman, having sold over 100 million CDs and DVDs worldwide, overseen over 3,000 licensed merchandise items, and starred in the longest running celebrity reality show to date. More impressive is that he handles all of his business ventures on his own—no personal assistant, few handlers, and as little red tape as possible.

In Me, Inc., Simmons shares a lifetime of field-tested and hard-won business advice that will provide readers with the tools needed to build a solid business strategy, harness the countless tools available in the digital age, network like hell, and be the architect for the business entity that is you. Inspired by The Art of War, the book dispenses Simmons’ in-depth insights via thirteen specific principles for success based on his own experience, triumphs, and instructional failures in business—from finding the confidence within yourself that’s necessary to get started, to surrounding yourself with the right people to partner with and learn from, to knowing when to pull the plug and when to double-down. These thirteen principles are a skeleton key into a world of success, freedom, peace of mind and, most importantly, financial success.

According to Gene Simmons, the way to earn money (and it's all about the money) is to work hard, work all the time and never stop working. The book is split into two parts, one about Simmons and one about the advice he has for one to become successful in life.
The first part is actually pretty interesting. It traces his life from being born in Israel in poverty and then coming to America and how he comes through, working hard and earning money to support his mother and then on to establishing KISS. Unfortunately the meaty parts are really short. The early parts of his life is really interesting and the impressions of a young poor boy coming to America is page-turning material but after turning a page, then that material runs out. While his experience with capitalism is interesting it's also slightly off-putting in a way. Perhaps it is in the missing empathy for other life-styles that is offending to me. Simmons tells us about his way but without remorse and portrays it as the only way.
The second part of the book is not better. There Simmons boils down the lessons he learned throughout life to let the reader make their own fortune. But it's again only grounded in his own experience which simply cannot work for everybody. Simmons' intense focus on earning money is also jarring as it seems like the purpose of earning money is to earn more money. It's great if it works for him, but the book discards trivial things like vacations and human relationships for the sole reason of earning more money. Simmons also believes that if what you do is what you love, then apparently it's also something that you can do indefinitely without rest or focusing on health.

I went into this book hoping that it would be a fun read with some few golden truths packaged in stories from the rock world which I don't know anything about. Instead it's a one-sided tale from a workaholic who doesn't seem to care much about the fact that money is a tool, a means to the end, but focuses on how to make more and more money with no regard on anything else but money. I would not recommend this if you're looking for business advice or as a biography (I think he has written a proper autobiography).

Gene Simmons is an interesting, thoughtful, self-made man with a variety of insights - some of them useful. I've personally offered to pay my sons NOT to get married before they're at least 30 years old, and more each year after that until they're financially and emotionally ready for the commitment. So I'm right on board with some of Me, Inc.'s wisdom. That said, Mr. Simmons (and his editor I suppose) is unable to mask his egomania, and his stories of his own success are (unnecessarily) split roughly 70/30 between useful, inspirational thoughts, and almost foolish self-aggrandizement. Hmm. Let me just think for a moment: "Baby 101". Yes, that's genius, let me lock-down that domain name, and then get myself some appointments with some senior leaders at large corporations and get this entrepreneurial venture underway! In the meantime, I will date but not marry a Playboy Playmate (of the year, I believe) for 27 years without marrying her. Really? Neither of these likely are feats that can be accomplished with at least an 8 digit bank account, and I'm fairly certain Mr. Simmons passed that threshold some years ago. I bought this book for my son, but thought I'd read it first. Not sure I'll pass it on at all. Probably not useful for him until he gets a bit further along. A near miss!

I found Gene's book to be fantastic. Not as a fan of his music, but as a returning fan of his in how he thinks. I admittedly used his previous book as my source for inspiration on how to get what you want out of life when I published my own book on similar ideas in Hail Thyself! Unlocking the Secrets of Control, Wealth, and Power Paperback - February 5, 2014 under my real name, E. R. Vernor...I owe the likes of Gene Simmons, Donald Trump (his book Think Big) and very few other experts on the subject. If I had to pick one person in the world who influenced me the most on how to build a business from being homeless to running a publishing company and starting a TV production company I can only lay the mentorship at this man's feet. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to excel...if you don't have the drive to give your dreams your all, then forget it. I know I will be reading this book many many times over....Gene, if you read these reviews and spot this, contact me via this posted name on FaceBook, I have a business proposal for making us even more money.... Ha! I don't think it would happen but like the man says, Think big or go home!!!
