Music Speed Reading by David R. A great approach to improve sight reading of rhythms. The best study book I've used with students is "Music Speed Reading" by David Hickman. It teaches to play correct notes and rhythms by understanding and recognizing that great sight readers look at how note heads are spaced within measures rather than looking at stems and flags that are usually associated with rhythmic values. Here's some places I found that has David Hickman's "Music Speed Reading: - In the US

In a study conducted by William Leafblad and Richard Colwell of the University of Illinois, the usage by senior and junior high music students of this book resulted in significant improvements in their abilities to sight-read on the clarinet, flute, violin, viola and piano. Sight-reading skills are of paramount importance, especially in the current competitive atmosphere in the music industry. Don't let this essential part of music education be ignored. Hickman's tried and true methodology should form a fundamental part of your curriculum.

Reviews about Music Speed Reading (3):
This book doesn't actually tackle speed reading. It provides only one technique for speed reading (grouping info) and has only three pages of instructional text. The rest of the book provides music to practice speed reading on; this is no more beneficial though than any sheet music you might sight read. I feel like this book is a total rip-off.
I have been teaching since 1993 and I have to say this book is an excellent resource for woodshedding reading and long tones. Follow what it teaches you and you will read better than before. It is not fancy and is made up of only heads to notes (no stems) but gives you a text to read with suggested tempo variations to get your fingers moving around different intervals, your eyes adjusted to moving with the tempo and extending your long tone practice over a page of notes. The other reviewer had tunnel vision and could not see the value of this. If you think out of the box, this text is powerful. The proof is in the pudding. My alumni are sitting in First chair Positions at the following universities as FRESHMAN!!! University of Memphis, Murray State, Bethel, Ole Miss, and Samford.
Fabulous book! If you practice regularly, you will see that your eyes move ahead more intelligently and can read ahead more and more. Reading even technically difficult music becomes easier because of how the eyes are being trained. Highly recommend.
